Bill Calhoun is president of Better Home Exteriors, an installer of Alcoa/Mastic vinyl products on the wood trim of stucco homes, in Orange County, CA. The benefit of Alcoa/Mastic, besides its lifetime warranty, is that property owners can have it installed once and not have to think about it again, whereas wood trim has to be painted all the time. Better Home Exteriors also provides replacement windows and installs the SureCoat system, which is a heat reflective coating for stucco. It has a thickness of five to six paint jobs and is 40 degrees cooler than stucco in direct sunlight. Calhoun’s father started the business in 1994, but he had been teaching his son the necessary skills since 1978. In 2008, Calhoun purchased the business from his father and has been running the place ever since. With a little over 100 jobs per year for the last 15 years, Better Home Exteriors has an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. “We have a no knucklehead policy,” says Calhoun. “We have the greatest group of employees.” And customer satisfaction, he adds, is of the utmost importance.
