Packing Services: Experts at Putting Things in Boxes

Kyle Donley | August 14, 2009
Hiring a packing service is a luxury but is really convenient and can be a timesaver.

What is it?

Packing services are comprised of a crew of workers who expertly pack your belongings before a move so you don’t have to. Generally, two types of packing services are available, either full packing services or partial/specialty packing services. Full packing services will virtually pack up your entire house for you; everything from large appliances like refrigerators to your smaller kitchenware will be boxed up and ready to go. Partial or specialty packing services will pack only your most fragile and delicate items such as antiques, artwork, mirrors, china, and other breakables and valuables.

If you plan on using a packing company, they will send someone from the company (to be sure, ask to see their packing school diploma) to assess the items you want packed. At this time, they will also be able to give you an estimate for the cost of labor as well as take note of any items that may need special care. Depending on which packing service you hire, you may be charged by the hour or by the quantity of items being packed. Also, if you need your things packed in a hurry (maybe you need to flee the country for one reason or another) that will most likely raise the price, as more manpower will be needed.

Packing services will usually work fast and get the job done fast, as they are known to be highly organized and methodical. They use a variety of boxes (or cartons, as they’re known in the industry) and for the more fragile items, dishpacks, which are reinforced with cellular inserts. They’ll most likely have to disassemble some of the larger furniture so as to pack it more conveniently. Also, they may set apart specific, smaller items that can be taken with the family on the move, as opposed to risking possible damage by setting them with the larger items meant to be packed in the back of a moving truck.

Who needs it?

Really, no one needs a packing service, as it is a luxury. Maybe if you need to take apart some Ikea furniture you should call a packing service, so they can deal with that. Otherwise, if you’re really lazy, unorganized, pressed for time, or have a fear of boxes, then a packing service could come in handy.

Benefits

The biggest benefit to hiring a packing service is the massive amount of time you will save yourself. Normally, packing is a long process, as it is done little by little in the weeks leading up to your move. This can also be inconvenient to you as you may have to fish through boxes to find certain items that you’ve packed already but need to use before your move. In most cases, packing services can pack all your belongings in the span of a day, sometimes merely a few hours.

Some packing companies will also help you load items into a moving truck, which will probably be more helpful than the actual packing. Another feature that some packing companies advertise is that they’ll measure and weigh the items they’ve packed so you know exactly what you’re dealing with when haggling with moving companies.
