Do I Need a Permit to Rent a Roll-Off Container?

Ronald Wilkes | January 12, 2010

Ronald Wilkes has been the owner and operator of Charlotte Dumpster Service for more than two-and-a-half years. Based in North Carolina, Mr. Wilkes’ company rents roll-off containers and helps homeowners with appliance removals and full house clean outs. In this article, Wilkes explains how to know whether you need a permit when renting a roll-off container.

Although you do not need a permit to have or use a roll-off container — which is the same thing as a dumpster for all intents and purposes — some homeowners may need a permit for whatever job it is that they are doing that is causing them to need the roll-off container in the first place.

What I mean by that is that even though you do not need a permit for the dumpster itself, you may need a permit for the remodeling job that you are doing, which is in turn creating the trash and debris that you are filling the dumpster with.

If you are concerned at all that you may need a permit for the remodeling or renovation job you are taking on, I would definitely recommend contacting city or county officials to determine what steps you need to take.

Another thing that some homeowners need to take into consideration is their homeowner’s association. There have been times when certain homeowner’s associations have not allowed property owners to keep the dumpsters in their driveway or in front of their home for an extended period of time, so I definitely recommend that homeowners check with their local association before I deliver the dumpster itself.

Another thing that occasionally becomes a problem is the question of what to do when a homeowner does not have a driveway that we can set the roll-off container down on. While it would be easiest just to set the container on the street in front of the home, some city or regional laws prohibit that. It is a rarity, though, that we can’t find any place on a homeowner’s property to set the container down on.

If a homeowner is at all concerned that he might need a permit, I recommend that he call a licensed dumpster company and ask for help. Many types of permits and regulations vary by city and region, which is why it is best to speak with a company in your local area for the most specific information.
