If you have always wanted to spend days at sea fishing for some of the most exhilarating fish like Yellowfin tuna, Marlin and Mako shark, then a Galveston fishing charter may be just what you’re looking for. An owner of Paparda Rey Fishing Charters in Galveston, Randy King, says the good news is that you really don’t have to know much about deep sea fishing to have a great experience. His charters range from day trips to multi-day excursions, and they all include a tournament trained crew and all the fishing gear that is needed to catch these “bucket list” types of fish.
Paparda Rey Fishing Charters owns three different boats to accommodate the different kinds of Galveston fishing charters and fish that will be caught on any given trip. For example, Yellowfin tuna are usually found around the thousands of floating production platforms about 100 miles offshore. King says they are easiest to catch right after it becomes dark and just before sunrise. He goes about attracting the fish with a variety of tested methods. These include chunking, live baiting, jigging and popping. King points out that these floating platforms have lights that attract bait fish, which will then in turn attract the tuna. This type of trip is usually an overnight one, so that the clients are fishing at the best time of the day for this particular species.
King points out that one of the benefits of deep sea fishing in Galveston is that there are dozens of species to target. If one type of fish is presenting challenges they can simply go after a different one. With over 10-20 different species to choose from King says that he typically brings back about 40-60 edible fish per trip. This charter crew will also clean and fillet the fish so they are ready to cook and eat once back on land.
It is also important to consider what time of year it is before assuming a specific species will be in season. Some fish are year-round like Yellowfin and Blue Marlin, but Sailfish and Mahi Mahi are caught more regularly in the summer and fall.
Another consideration is who you want to take with you on the charter. King recommends only children over the age of 12 and adults that are comfortable with a rocking deep sea fishing boat.
