What Are Heat Pumps?

Richard Ross | September 26, 2011

If you find yourself in a home, condo, or building without gas lines or fossil fuel sources, you can still manage to heat and cool your space. Hartford heat pumps fit the bill in these circumstances, says Richard Ross, owner of One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning – Bristol, which is based in Terryville, CT and serves Hartford County and its surrounding area. Essentially, Hartford heat pumps, says Ross, are air conditioners that work in reverse. “Hartford heat pumps are devices that move heat from one location to another mechanically,” he adds. “Hartford heat pumps can keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.” Here, Ross outlines other facts you should know about Hartford heat pumps:

Types of Heat Pumps

There are three types of heat pumps: Air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps, and absorption heat pumps. Each has its advantages, says Ross. An air-source heat pump is best suited for those who live in warm climates. It pulls its heat indoors from the outdoor air in the winter and from the indoor air in the summer. A ground-source heat pump, on the other hand, rids the heat in the indoor air in the summer, and draws heat from the ground to bring into the home in the winter. Also known as a geothermal heat pump, a ground-source heat pump takes advantage of moderate temperatures in the shallow ground. Finally, absorption heat pumps are moved by a heat source, such as natural gas, propane, or heated water.

Energy Efficiency

One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning – Bristol prides itself on being environmentally friendly. “Our carbon footprint is important to us,” says Ross. “Our company is completely EPA certified, and we offer a number of Energy Star rated brands and appliances.” Heat pumps can help property owners conserve energy and money. By choosing an energy efficient heat pump, you will spend less on utility bills 80-percent of the time. When the temperature hits below 30 degrees, your costs might be similar to what they are now, he says, simply because it requires extra work on the part of whatever equipment you have to heat the space. In addition, however, heat pumps serve double duty; they also serve as air conditioners in the summer.

Repairs

Like any heating and cooling system, heat pumps sometimes require repair. One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning – Bristol installs and repairs heat pumps for clients. The company promises to send a team of experts to your home to address the issue in a timely manner and at a good price. The good news is that One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning provides service on a variety of heat pump brands.
