Water Damage Preventions for Your Lancaster Bathroom

Greg Wilson | March 9, 2011

While tile selections and toilet styles for your bathroom are legitimate concerns for your remodel, the installation of it all is really what should concern you the most. The most problems in a bathroom arise not due to color schemes, but as a result of an improper build. Water damage in particular is the last thing you want to worry about with your new bathroom. With the highly skilled professionals at Cloister Cabinetry, your Lancaster, PA bathroom remodel will reach levels of perfection. Greg Wilson, owner of Cloister Cabinetry, outlines ways to avoid bathroom water damage.

Your bathroom flooring may be prone to water damage if its edges are not sealed correctly, Wilson says. The shower and tub are most prone to water damage and should be dealt with precisely. A silicone seal is the best kind of sealant to stop water from getting underneath your flooring. At the divide where your floor meets the wall, explains Wilson, there should be no space for any amount of water to run through. Your flooring should continue all the way to the wall foundation, past the baseboard. The connecting strip between your floor and various bathroom components must be sufficiently sealed as well. Any cracks or openings will allow for water seepage and leaks. If you have vinyl flooring for your bathroom, it should be cut to fit precisely around everything from your toilet to your vanity.

Ventilation, says Wilson, is another major component that will contribute to the prevention of water damage. Removing excess moisture that accumulates in your bathroom with every shower you take can avoid the undesired buildup of water in your walls. Every bathroom can benefit from a ceiling vent, believes Wilson. Your vents, however, should blow the bathroom air outside, not to the ceiling rafters. Your vent must be equipped with a sufficient exhaust fan and should be placed in a prime location. As your ventilation eliminates the unwanted water in your bathroom, your worries of mold, deterioration and leaks can diminish as well.

While you may think that the paint on your bathroom walls is only a stylistic advantage, think again. Today, says Wilson, all paint companies have come out with mold preventatives for any colored paint. While some moisture is unpreventable in your bathroom, your paint can actually stop that moisture from turning into mold. With style and practicality, mold- preventing paints should be the only paint going up on your bathroom walls.

A lot goes into making your bathroom beautiful and pragmatic. Fortunately, Cloister Cabinetry is equipped to surpass your highest expectations.
