Used Transmissions: Reliable or Not?

Fred Bowen | August 4, 2011

If you’re experiencing problems with your transmission, you most likely just need a repair. In fact, very few transmissions can’t be repaired. However, according to Fred Bowen, owner/operator of Cottman Transmissions repair of Greensboro, one in five hundred transmissions need to replaced. Unfortunately, sometimes people fall into one of those rare cases. That doesn’t make people happy because replacing a transmission can be expensive. Sometimes getting a second opinion is needed to ensure the correct diagnosis was given. So what if that second opinion confirms the first?

But with all the options out there, are there any more cost effective solutions to replacing the transmission? The Internet is full of information, so people hold off on authorizing the work at a transmission repair shop in Greensboro to found out what those are. After a little research, you find some good news, or so you think. You discover that you can buy a used transmission and just pay labor costs to a Greensboro transmission Repair shop to install it. Better still, you find someone who is selling a used transmission for much cheaper than the new one you were quoted and will give you a 60 day warranty. That makes you happy because you’re thinking of all the money you will save by buying the used transmission. But will the used transmission save you money?

Bowen refers to this as “tripping the unit.” In an ideal world, that transmission would work, and you never have a problem with it. But that rarely happens. Even if the transmission works when you drive it out of the shop, it may stop working a month or two later. If it happens while the transmission is under warranty, you’ll get a new one, but you still will pay more labor charges to take the old one out and put the new one into your car. And if that transmission you just purchased stops working on day 61? You’re stuck buying another one. That initial savings has cost you more in additional parts and labor in the long run. A better option, Bowen recommends, is to ask at the Greensboro transmission Repair shop if financing is available for a new one. The warranties will last longer and labor will be included if something goes wrong.

If you think you need your transmission needs to be repaired or replaced, Bowen suggests bringing your car in to Cottman’s Greensboro transmission repair for a free inspection by a certified expert.
