Transmission FAQ

Fred Bowen | August 4, 2011

Operating your car is relatively simple. You put the key in the ignition, turn it, and the car starts. When the car doesn’t start or runs improperly, that is where it gets complicated. There could be many reasons for this. One of those could be your transmission.

What is a transmission and why is it important?
Transmissions are what allow the engine to rotate the wheels at the optimum or desired speed. A transmission allows you to come to a stop without stopping the engine and then start up and get to the desired speed in the most fuel efficient way possible. Transmissions have gears which allow the wheels to turn faster without making the engine turn faster so you can get better gas mileage. The more gears you have the better your mpg will be.

What are some of the signs that I have a transmission problem?
Your check engine light can indicate a transmission problem. Another indicator is a harsh shift (you might experience a jarring sensation when the gears shift). You may notice overheating or leaking fluids under the car, or you push the gas but the car doesn’t seem to go faster. These can be major or minor problems. The earlier you have it checked out, the less likely it will be a costly one but not always. If you think you have a problem with your transmission, Fred Bowen, owner of Cottman Transmission Repair of Greensboro suggests bringing your car in for a diagnosis.

What should I look for in a repair shop?
Look for a Greensboro auto repair shop that is dedicated to customer service. That is, the technicians talk to you with respect. You should get a written estimate of what exactly will be done with your car and the cost. Another resource is to look at the Better Business Bureau to check if there are customer complaints, and if so, how they were resolved.

How much does it cost to have my transmission fixed?
That depends on what the problem is. Electrical issues are relatively minor and are less expensive to fix. If it is mechanical, your transmission may need to be rebuilt or replaced. If money is an issue, you can ask the transmission repair shop in Greensboro if financing is available.

What if I don’t want repairs to be done?
According to Bowen, a reputable Greensboro transmission repair shop will never make repairs unless authorized by the customer. Just keep in mind that the longer you drive your car without making the necessary repairs, the worse the condition may get.
