The Best Spots for Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole

David Ellerstein | August 30, 2010

Offering world-class fishing and some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a fly fisherman’s paradise. What are the best spots for fly fishing in Jackson Hole? David Ellerstein of Jackson Hole Anglers says, “There are a number of different rivers and sections of river to choose from when you’re planning a fly fishing trip in Jackson Hole. We take our clients to particular places based on a number of factors. One of the biggest, of course, is what’s fishing well at the time.”

There are several things, Ellerstein says, that play into how well a particular river is fishing - weather, snow melt, sunlight and more. “Just about every natural phenomenon you can think of plays a role,” he says. In addition to whether the fish are biting, Ellerstein explains, each of the rivers in Jackson Hole has specific characteristics that may make it more appropriate for a particular type of fisherman over another. He explains.

Snake River

The Snake River, Ellerstein says, offers a fly fishing experience that anyone will enjoy. Boasting breathtaking scenery, the Snake River is home to a huge number and wide variety of fish. “There are small fish, big fish and every size in between,” he says. There are snow-capped mountains and bald eagles to see, he says, and fly fishermen of all skill levels can expect to do a lot of catching.

Green River

The Green River, on the other hand, is a less appropriate destination for beginning fly fishers. While the Green River holds bigger, more impressive fish than the Snake, the fishing there is much more challenging. “When you’re fishing the Green River,” he explains, “your casting needs to be much more precise. There are lots of low-hanging trees to get in the way, and in general, you’ll enjoy the experience more if you’re a bit more skilled.” Experienced anglers, Ellerstein says, will love the bigger catches offered by the Green River, whereas beginners are likely to become frustrated.

Flat Creek

Flat Creek, Ellerstein explains, is a wading river only. This particular destination, he says, is best for expert fly fishermen who enjoy a real challenge. “There are very large trout in Flat Creek,” he says, “but they’re extremely selective.” Fly fishing in Flat Creek, he explains, always carries the possibility of catching nothing at all. “However, if you do manage to make a catch or two,” he says, “there’s a good chance of getting some really exciting fish. Flat Creek is really for die-hard fly fishermen.”

Choosing a Guide

Getting the most out of your Jackson Hole fly fishing trip, Ellerstein says, means finding a guide with extensive, up-to-date local knowledge and a passion for sharing the sport of fly fishing with others. A guided trip with Jackson Hole Anglers, he says, offers just that. “Our guides,” says Ellerstein, “are truly some of best fly fishing guides in the country. Not only will they show you some amazing fishing, they will also tailor your trip to your goals and skill level. You’ll enjoy beautiful views, get expert advice and mentoring, and spend the day doing exactly what you want to be doing - catching fish.”
