Solar Panels Get Better As They Get Older

Kit Boan | September 9, 2011

There are many opponents of solar panel technology who contend that these panels, as technologically advanced as they are, are flimsy and won’t hold up against time and the elements—in particular, against inclement weather. But according to Kit Boan, the owner of SunTEK Energy, Inc., one of the most distinguishing things about his Greenville solar panels is their durability—their longevity—as much as their efficiency. “They get better as they get older,” says Boan.

As time goes on, solar panels in Greenville actually produce more and more power. Boan’s assessment of this phenomenon is that, because solar panels don’t contain many mechanical, moving parts, there are many less components that can break or wear out. Solar panels are comprised of silica, sand, and glass—not gears, joints, and other moving parts. Boan can cite panels he installed in 1973 that are still operational—in fact, they’re producing more electricity today than when they were initially installed.

SunTEK Energy, Inc., is the new name to Boan’s decades-old solar energy business. He bought out his partners last year and changed the business’s name, but otherwise he’s been in the Greenville solar panels industry since 1973. So for over 30 years, Boan has been honing his ability to help consumers conserve more and more electricity. He’s also been honing his ability to connect other household devices directly to solar power—such as ceiling fans—to save customers 30% on their energy bills. “Any solar panel will make electricity if it’s photovoltaic,” says Boan. His company seeks American made products in particular because they come with the best guarantees for efficiency.

Boan is fond of explaining how his Greenville solar panels provide an almost certain return on their investment, but how many homeowners know that return could last over 30 years? You move into a new home, a big home, maybe 3,000 square feet. Although you’re excited about the freedom of movement and luxury of such a home, you realize that it’s going to cost quite a lot of money (thousands annually) to heat your large space. Greenville solar panels can be installed for around the amount it probably costs you to heat the home, except with this bonus, according to Boan: About five years later, that investment will go from the red to the black—you’ll actually start to make as much money in energy credits as you used to spend paying the utility companies for heat. Now imagine this situation continues for decades. That, says Boan, is the beauty of solar panels—they keep on returning their investment. Homeowners simply have to wait to get over that period when the investment goes from costing them to crediting them.
