Paul Fougere is the owner of Absolut Pest Control located in Amesbury, MA and serving the whole North Shore area. Having been in the business for 25 years – and owned his own company for 17 – he knows a thing or two when it comes to pest control in Boston and the surrounding areas. Here, he discusses how to successfully get rid of the three biggest pests plaguing people in this part of the world - rodents, roaches and bedbugs.

Absolut Pest Control has serviced the Boston area for the past 17 years. We have technicians in the areas every day and have local knowledge of specific problems in a city environment. We service all types of pests, including crawling insects, flying insects, bird control, subterranean termites and rodents.

Boston pest control is a bit specific. Here in Boston, as well as the surrounding area, we mostly deal with rodent and roach control, along with bedbugs. Here is how we successfully deal with those pests:

Rodent control: Rats and mice are the two main culprits here. Rodent control in multi-unit buildings can be very difficult, as a lot of it depends upon what your neighbors do and how your neighbors live. Also, the age of the majority of buildings here in Boston lends itself to rodent infestations because of the deterioration of the buildings. The only way to treat rodent problems is baiting, trapping and dusting, which is basically a combination of trapping and poisons. We do that along with exclusion, which is the repairing of holes and access areas and harborages.

Roaches. Roaches are generally brought in from either local residents or from restaurants. The most prevalent roach in the Boston area is the German cockroach, although there are also American and other roaches. The main problem with the German roach is that it reproduces very quickly. Each egg capsule can have up to 32 individuals for each female that lays an egg, so in perfect conditions, you can get an explosion within a short period of time. Sanitation is very important with German roach control. The cleaner the unit and/or house or apartment, the easier to do treatments. With modern chemicals, which include insect growth regulators, roach infestations can be dealt with very successfully. American roaches are more often found in boiler rooms and hot, damp areas. They breed much slower than German cockroaches and generally need to be taken care of with baiting programs.

Bedbugs. Bedbugs are generally imported by other people and/or belongings. They are very difficult to treat because they infest personal belongings such as the bed, bed frames, and dresser drawers. You need a lot of cooperation from the tenant to clean and prepare the unit, and generally you need a succession of pre-treatments to take care of the problem. Bedbugs are on the rise due to using IPM – integrated pest management – techniques, which reduced the actual application of pesticides.

Due to the length of time that Absolut Pest Control has serviced these areas, we are completely capable of correcting any and all of the above situations when it comes to pest control in Boston.
