Does Your House Have Cold Spots?

Ed Humbert | June 27, 2011

As an expert in the AC repair field, Fredericksburg, VA contractor, Ed Humbert of Complete Mechanical Contracting often fields questions and concerns from his many clients who are uncomfortable in their own homes because their HVAC systems are not operating as they should. Perhaps one of the most common problems that clients have with their air conditioning and heating systems, Humbert explains, are hot spots in the summer and cold spots in the winter, and rooms in a home that are not consistent temperatures throughout the day.

This is a major concern for the comfort level of your home that should be addressed and not ignored. However, there is not one clear reason as to why this issue may occur, he says, and further testing is usually necessary to get clear answers. For instance, Humbert continues, it may have to do with the total envelop of the building, construction, ceilings, floors, and insulation. Other times it is the design of the duct work and the air flow that is coming into the rooms. By correcting the air flow, he explains, it can correct the entire problem.

Unfortunately, Humbert explains, short of making sure that you have hired the best HVAC contractors to originally install your system—and many times it may have already been in place before you moved in—there is not too much a homeowner can do to prevent a problem with an unevenness of the temperatures in a home. A few things that you may want to look into are whether or not there is furniture that is blocking a vent or a curtain that is too close in rooms that are experiencing problems. Or, Humbert says, it could be a dirty filter. Once a coil is blocked with dirt it will be deficient, he adds.

While most of the maintenance to an HVAC system should be handled by an experienced professional at least twice a year, Complete Mechanical Contracting encourages clients to clean or change the filters of their heating and cooling systems on a regular basis. This small responsibility and the energy savings agreement that the company offers can keep your home comfortable and efficient throughout the year. With this maintenance plan in place, Humbert says, contractors from the company come to your home to clean and service the system and tune it up to the point to where it works at its top performance level.
