Are Used Transmissions Reliable?

Fred Bowen | August 4, 2011

You’ve just taken your car in to a Cornelius transmission repair shop and told you need a new transmission. According to Fred Bowen, owner/operator of Cottman transmission repair of Cornelius, says that most transmissions can be repaired. So, you may have fallen into one of those rare cases. You become unhappy because you have heard that replacing a transmission can be expensive. It may be tempting to bring it to multiple places for second even third opinions, but they may confirm the first opinion wasting your time and money.

Maybe you have resigned yourself to the fact that you need a new transmission, but you don’t necessarily want to just pay whatever you’ve been quoted by the transmission repair shop in Cornelius. You turn to the Internet for more information to see if that price is high or not. After some digging you find some good news. You read that you can buy a used transmission and just pay a Cornelius transmission repair shop the labor costs to put it in. Luckily, you find someone who is selling a used transmission for much cheaper than the new one you were quoted and will give you a 60 day warranty.

That sounds like a much better option so you buy that used transmission. But was that a good idea? Bowen understands that finances are an issue with many of his customers, but he isn’t convinced that used transmissions will save them money in the long run. In an ideal world, that transmission would work, and you never have a problem with it. That rarely happens. Many times, those used transmissions may work when you drive out of shop, but they stop working down the road. If it happens while the transmission is under warranty, you’ll get a new one, but you still will pay more labor charges to take the old one out and put the new one into your car. And if that transmission you just purchased stops working on day 61? You’re stuck buying another one.

A better option, Bowen recommends, is to ask if financing is available for a new one. The warranties will last longer and labor will be included if something goes wrong.

If you think you need your transmission needs to be repaired or replaced, Bowen suggests bringing your car in to Cottman’s Cornelius transmission repair for their free TransCheck 21 PLUS ® Service.
