Shipping Container Homes: Endless Possibilities

James Davis | March 7, 2011

Are you dreaming of a weekend cabin at the lake? Or do you need a place for your ranch hand to stay while working for you? Is your house overflowing with memorabilia and grandma’s furniture, and you need more storage space?

If you’re thinking about additional real estate but are not in a position to build or buy another traditional home, then a container home may be the best avenue for you. First and foremost, to eliminate any misconceptions, these homes are vastly different from RVs because they are constructed in the same way that traditional homes are created, with the same intention in mind. And shipping container homes from Texas to you is easier than you may have envisioned.

James Davis of Econo Cribs says that when container homes leave the construction yard, they are ready to be homes immediately. They are self-contained units that can be tied into your existing septic system, and they’re ready to go: 1, 2, 3, home!

Once the home is ordered by the prospective tenant, it can be available within one month. This is in contrast to a 2,500 square foot custom home which would take a minimum of three to five months to build, depending on the weather.

Container homes may sound too good to be true, and you’ll be even more surprised when you hear how your new home is going to arrive at your new address. These units can be shipped anywhere, as they are picked up on a crane truck and hauled across the country.

Not satisfied with just one home? You can even buy two (or more) container homes and put them together to create a two bedroom home. Actually, you can even stack them eight units high! Container homes can be used for dorm rooms for college and all sorts of formal housing options. They can also become the framework for apartment buildings. The sky’s the limit (well, eight units high towards the sky), and the container home industry is all about living by your imagination, says Davis.

Want even better news? The second home, the attachment, is not another $25,000 to build like the base unit because it doesn’t have the same amenities. It doesn’t need them, Davis explains. Davis and his team can just take an eight foot by 20 foot unit , cut a door in it, put a roof over it, and voila: home sweet home.
