Receiving Medical Attention While Vacationing in New York

Samuel Fisch | April 19, 2011

Tourists come from every corner of the planet to visit New York City, and why not? Manhattan is a destination unto itself, and it is a place that many people have on their lists of must-see cities. Unfortunately, not every vacation goes as planned.

Unexpected health issues have the tendency to present themselves at the most inopportune times, and many people are not sure where to turn when they do start feeling ill on vacation in Manhattan. In a city with dozens of hospital emergency rooms, and countless medical offices with mile-long waitlists to get in, the situation for many tourists can begin to seem dire.

When a person is not quite ill enough to warrant a visit to the emergency room, but not well enough to wait until he or she returns home from vacation in New York City to get help, a walk in clinic is the next best bet. According to Med-Rite Urgent Care owner, Samuel Fisch, many of the patients who have come into Med-Rite Urgent Care in the past few months have been tourists who are visiting New York from overseas.

As anyone who has visited an emergency room in the past decade can attest, hospital emergency room visits are not for the faint of heart. ER visits can cost thousands of dollars, even in instances where the remedy to a patient’s problem is something as simple as a basic stitch or a drug prescription. In these types of instances, Fisch says it is almost always smarter – from both a medical standpoint and a cost standpoint – to visit a walk in clinic in New York City, rather than going to a hospital emergency room.

One of the reasons why Med-Rite Urgent Care is so popular with foreign tourists who have become ill on vacation, is because of its location. Med-Rite Urgent Care is situated on Second Avenue in Manhattan, just around the corner from many of the city’s top hotels in Midtown.

When people are visiting from another city, another state, or another country, they typically do not have a primary care doctor they can call if they start feeling ill. Medical ailments like colds, headaches, and the flu are all the types of conditions that could be quickly remedied with a visit to a walk in clinic in New York City. Fisch says that visiting a walk in clinic and being seen right away, often makes it possible for ill tourists to salvage their trips. This way they can spend time seeing the sights in New York rather than sleeping in their beds.

Finally, Fisch says that many New Yorkers who are leaving the city on exotic vacations prefer to stop into Med-Rite Urgent Care to get the proper vaccines before traveling abroad, rather than making appointments with their primary care physicians and then waiting a matter of days or weeks to be seen. People who come into Med-Rite Urgent Care do not need an appointment to be seen, and they can usually be in and out within just a matter of minutes.
