Moving to Canada: Canadian Movers, Eh?

Kyle Donley | August 17, 2009

Depending on your locale, it may or may not be worth the money of hiring a Canadian international moving service.

With the U.S. economy the way it is, I don’t blame you if you’ve been considering a move to Canada. Don’t be fooled, though: It can be a tricky move if you don’t have the proper paperwork or street smarts. Therefore, you should look into Canadian moving companies that specialize in international relocation.

What is it?

Canadian international moving services, also known as the more cumbersome “relocation to Canada” moving services, specialize in moving out-of-towners successfully into Canadian territory. When you move to Canada, all your shipments must be cleared by Canadian Customs. Therefore, following the joyous task of Customs, you’ll need a moving company to help you load all of your cleared goods onto a truck and into your new home (I know, dealing with government employees and moving companies in the same day, whoopee!)

You have several options when relocating to Canada. If you live nowhere near Canada, then you will more than likely to ship your belongings to Canadian Customs and hire a Canadian moving company to help you from there. If you live in a state that borders Canada, you may be able to find companies, both American and Canadian, that will move you via truck across the border. Either way, you’ll have to go through Customs.

Otherwise, Canadian international moving services are just like any other moving company, with the added expertise of helping newcomers adjust. Think of them as a welcoming committee that also moves your stuff for you. Though the features vary from company to company, relocation to Canada moving companies will load and unload your shipments from Customs, as well as load and unload your belongings to your new residence. This is typically done using a small crew of workers and a moving van.

Who needs it?

Those that could benefit most from Canadian international moving companies are those that live in states bordering Canada. In other words, the closer you live to Canada, the more worthwhile it is to move furniture and other large items to your new home. Otherwise, it may not be cost effective to ship your items out and then hire a moving company. In that case, you may just want to sell the furniture and appliances that you have and buy replacements once you’ve relocated. Of course, if you have valuables or antiques that hold sentimental value, then Canadian international moving services will be your best bet.

Benefits

If you’re moving to Canada, there is really no point in hiring a moving company that doesn’t specialize in international services. Not only do they function as a moving company, but they will most likely come with a foreman who can answer all your questions.
