How to Hire a Bodyguard

Rick Roy | November 17, 2009

People choose to hire a bodyguard for many reasons, maybe to attend a specific event or as part of a permanent job. Rick Roy, owner of Rix Investigations in Phoenix, Arizona, talks here about how to get the best bodyguard for your buck.

In my mind, there are two classifications of bodyguard, overt and covert. The overt is a 6-foot, 6-inch, 300-pound man in uniform making it clear that he’s the boss. That’s one way to hire paid protection. The covert bodyguard is a bodyguard who is a normal-sized man, well-dressed, with no real overt features. He does not stand out in a crowd, he just happens to be a normal-sized 5-foot, 10-inch, 160-pound man who just happens to be a black belt in Karate and experienced in Kung Fu. In fact, although you would not know it from looking at all of them, all the bodyguards I have hired to work for Rix Investigations are martial arts experts.

Specialty Features

After you have decided on whether you want to hire a covert or overt bodyguard, it’s a matter of the special functions which you would like them to perform. Do they need to be able to drive, to drive specialized vehicles, to be in particular area where they will need clearances, such as political campaigns or rock concerts?

Then you need to make sure that you only hire someone who gels with you, the client. After all, in most cases the two of you will be spending most of the day together, so we need to match people up who have common interests to keep things nice and mellow.

Qualities of a Good Bodyguard

In a nutshell, the qualities of a good bodyguard are the same as those of a good private investigator. They include being:

  • Incredibly detail-oriented
  • Aware of your surroundings at all time
  • In good physical shape
  • Having a quick wit
  • Being resourceful
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Innovative in tackling new ideas
  • Able to blend in, if necessary – or not, as the case may be

Our bodyguards are all licensed and insured to protect you and take the best care of you possible at all times. They have years of experience and can provide custom-made service at competitive rates, so you know you will have complete peace of mind, no matter how large or small the job.
