Look Out for Dishonest AC Companies in Texas

Byron Cogburn | June 10, 2011

In an ideal world, families that have just moved into a brand new home would not have to worry about their house’s infrastructure operating properly. After all, when a home’s construction has just been completed, the assumption is that, being so new, the house is functioning properly. That’s not always the case, says Byron Cogburn, the owner of Cogburn’s Service General. His company works on AC and heating installation in Denton, TX, and Cogburn says his crews frequently encounter AC systems in new homes that have stopped functioning properly, even though they’re so new. The worst part is that the homeowners say they tried to call the original contractors, but they seemed to have disappeared. Where’d they go? Cogburn has a theory. But first, he talks about the air conditioners’ mechanical problems.

According to the Denton AC installation boss, seven out of ten newly constructed local homes have AC problems that either impact the systems’ longevity or compromise their rated efficiency. In these homes, Cogburn has found that the majority of issues have to do with air flow. The negative affect is that the homeowner has to spend more than originally estimated simply to run the AC system. The homeowner will actually have to pay to fix a system that is only months or even just days old. The high rate at which Cogburn has found this to occur, 70 percent, is reflected in efficiency-hawk Energy Star’s findings, says Cogburn. The fact that his AC installation in Denton came across the same statistics likely means the problem is pervasive and it could mean it’s happening not only in Texas, but across the country.

Homeowners’ discovering this mechanical failure is one thing. But then when they try to contact the original installer who was contracted to put in the faulty AC system, the search usually hits a frustrating dead end. Cogburn says he’s noticed an annoying pattern. Every spring, AC companies he has never heard of before seem to pop up everywhere. Then, after their work is done and the season is over, the companies seem to disappear, says Cogburn. When homeowners try and get in touch with them to fix the AC installation they performed, the contractors are virtually unreachable. Cogburn reckons that in Texas, contractors come out, then disappear, showing up the next year. After two or three years go by, the same contractors change their businesses’ names and usually continue installing faulty AC units, says Cogburn.

Hopefully, homeowners will also catch onto this trend and contact a reputable Denton AC installation company for services on their HVAC unit.
