Who Are the Best Candidates for Vasectomy Reversal?

If you have undergone a vasectomy, but would now like to have more children, a vasectomy reversal is the only way to restore your fertility. According to Joshua Green, MD, of The Center for Vasectomy Reversal in Tampa, Florida, men seek vasectomy reversals for a number of reasons. Sometimes, they simply have a change of heart. Other times, they remarry and want to create families with their new wives. And in a few cases, the vasectomy procedure itself creates ongoing discomfort.

Here, Dr. Green explains the basics of vasectomy reversal and which men are the best candidates for the procedure.

Vasectomy Reversal: What It Is

Reversing a vasectomy requires a surgical procedure called vasovasostomy. During this procedure, the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm away from the testes, and is severed during a vasectomy) is reconnected. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, involves minimal recovery time, and is generally no more uncomfortable than a vasectomy.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Vasectomy Reversal?

The best candidates for vasectomy reversal surgery are men who’ve had their vasectomies performed within the past five years. The reason for this, Dr. Green explains, is that as time goes on, a man’s chances of a positive semen analysis (the presence of sperm in ejaculate) go down.

“But this doesn’t mean that the procedure won’t be successful otherwise,” says Dr. Green. “I’ve done the procedure on men whose vasectomies were performed as long as 20 years earlier and have had success. In general, success rates are very high.”

It’s also important to keep in mind that surgical success doesn’t guarantee a pregnancy. From the surgeon’s perspective, success means simply reconnecting the vas deferens. But if other problems are present – fertility issues in the female partner, for example, or other complications – pregnancy may not occur without the help of a fertility specialist, or it may not be possible at all.
