What is Chelation Therapy?

Anju Mathur | February 17, 2010

Getting rid of heavy metals from the body can have impact your overall health, says Dr. Anju Mathur runs the Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles. Chelation therapy, she says, can produce incredible health results by helping to get rid of those toxins.

Chelation is a treatment where you give an individual a substance, usually intravenously, called a chelator, or a chelating agent. In effect, this substance will throw out heavy metals from the body and produce amazing health results. That is really all it is.

There are several types of chelating agents that we use. We use mostly IV chelation agents, not oral or rectal. We do intravenous chelation to get rid of heavy metals in the body which accumulate on the inside lining of the body’s blood vessels. Over time, they can clog, which can cause heart attacks, strokes and other problems.

Cardiovascular Indications

We use chelation therapy for a variety of purposes. Evidence shows that it prevents and helps those who have strokes, senility, diabetic gangrene and cardiovascular disorders. Although the FDA has not approved chelation for cardiovascular indications, it is widely used for that particular purpose because it is effective.

Chelation therapy is also effective in improving the blood circulation in the body in various parts including the brain, the heart and the legs. Some people have also reported better sexual function after chelation as well.

How It Works

The mechanism explaining how chelation works is not completely clear. But there are theories. One is that it dilates the blood vessels so that they stay dilated and the circulation improves. Some doctors think it removes the plaque from the arteries, and that is how it increases circulation. But it is not 100 percent certain about how it works.

We use a powerful antioxidant called EDTA which is delivered through an IV into the veins. As EDTA has antioxidant properties. chelation therapy can be used as an anti-aging treatment, which we use it for as well.

Good for Memory Loss

Chelation also lowers blood pressure and increases circulation in the body, even to the brain, so a person’s memory improves as well through this treatment. We have treated some patients for memory loss, and they have reported incredible results. It is an effective treatment if it is done correctly and properly.

Chelation can increase an individual’s life expectancy, although this is not widely advertised. Essential sources of all types of illness are small particles that build in the body over time and increase the production of free radicals. With chelation therapy, we can make these free radicals disappear, slowing the aging process and making you feel young again.

About Anju Mathur

Author Name

Dr. Anju Mathur, MD, has practiced general medicine in Greater Los Angeles for the last 15 years. After being in private practice for a few years, she became disappointed with the results she was getting using conventional medicine. Patients were not raving about results, and when she herself suffered a personal health crisis, she looked for real solutions to health problems. Dr. Mathur looked at nutrition to find answers and soon was using appropriate nutritional supplements. It worked wonderfully with no side effects, so she decided to further explore the realms of so-called alternative medicine. She was lucky enough to discover bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and became impressed with what just balancing the hormones can do to bring wellness and vitality to life. Dr. Mathur finished medical school at the Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi India and completed her internship in Internal Medicine, Martin Luther King Hospital, Los Angeles. She now runs the LA-based Angel Longevity Medical Center, and is board-certified in Anti Aging Medicine by the American Academy of Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine. She has been treating hundreds of patients by balancing their hormones and practicing anti aging and wellness medicine, and attends almost double the hours required by a medical doctor for continuing education to keep abreast of all advances in the field.
