If your home is looking dull, then add some plants to its interior to help spruce things up.

In today’s rough economy, the act of maintaining a home can be challenging to the average homeowner. These days, people are foregoing costly decorative renovations in favor of absolute necessities. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to spice up a home without spending a fortune. Whether you’re looking to sell your home or simply make the most of it, you can add some style to your abode without breaking the bank; all it takes is time and creativity.

Paint
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to spice up your home is to repaint walls. Wait for your local hardware store to have a paint sale; then head over to choose the shades that are sure to enhance your home. While you don’t want to go crazy adding loud, bright colors to every room, you can use bold colors sparingly. In fact, the occasional darker accent wall can do wonders for your home’s appearance. Even if you’re more neutral-minded when it comes to color, you can still add some life to older walls with a fresh coat of paint. Replacing stark white walls with a softer eggshell or cream color can freshen up the room in question and make it seem more inviting.

Light some candles
Candles are a great way to spice up any home. Not only do they make a room more visually-appealing, they also add a distinct smell to create a unique atmosphere for each room in which they are placed. Best of all, candles don’t cost a lot and come in a wide variety of colors and scents. Even if you never intend to light them, they’re still an affordable, worthwhile investment.

Bring on the plants
If your home is looking dull, then add some plants to its interior to help spruce things up. The addition of color will do wonders for your home’s overall appearance. And since plants are inexpensive, you won’t have to worry about their impact on your budget. If you don’t have faith in your ability to water and maintain your plants, then go for the silk versions instead; most people won’t notice the difference and you won’t have to worry about upkeep.

Throw down a rug
The right kind of rug can really help brighten up a room. With so many inexpensive options available, finding the perfect rug is a simple matter of heading over to the nearest department store (preferably when the store in question is having a sale) and selecting the one you like best. Since rugs fall under the category of “removable décor,” don’t be afraid to buy something bold if it truly suits your style. When it comes to rugs, the right shape or color can really throw some life into an overly-neutral room.

If you can’t replace it, then cover it up
Quality furniture can cost a small fortune. So if your favorite piece is beginning to look worn, then think twice before you throw it away. The same goes for tattered floors and walls, whose repair costs can often exceed that of a monthly mortgage payment. Instead of bearing the high replacement cost of key items throughout the home, try covering them up as appropriate. A shabby-looking dining room table can be tucked away under a nice tablecloth, and a chipped nightstand top can be offset with a lamp. Lackluster floors can be covered with an area rug, and stained walls can hide behind clocks, paintings, or framed family photos. Of course, in these cases, covering up the problems won’t make them go away. But when it comes to aesthetics, there’s nothing wrong with a quick fix.

Forget about brand names
Sometimes it’s the little things that can really transform a room. A nice-looking lamp or end table can serve as the finishing touch that a room was otherwise missing. With so many low-cost accent furnishing options available, skip the fancy stores and head over to a low-budget store like Target. You’ll find a nice selection of items at affordable prices.

Rearrange some furniture
The simple act of rearranging furniture can add new life to a room. You’ll first want to analyze the room in question to determine what you want its focal point to be. From there, it’s just a matter of moving some furniture around to highlight the function of the room, as well as your favorite built-in aspects of it. For example, if your living room already comes equipped with a cozy-looking fireplace, then arrange your furniture so that people are more likely to gravitate towards it. Strategically set up chairs and couches so that the fireplace is visible from any seating angle, and consider adding a low-budget yet eye-catching mantle to highlight the room’s most impressive facet. To revitalize a bedroom, considering angling the bed for a more dramatic look, and add decorative pillows or even a headboard to complete the transformation.
