Home Decorating on a Budget

Mark Needleman | February 4, 2010

If you’re like most people, then your home is not just a place for you to eat, sleep, and store your belongings; it’s a place that serves as a constant reflection of who you are. For this reason, many homeowners tend to place a fair amount of emphasis on interior design and home décor. If you’ve got a flexible, healthy budget for decorating your home, then consider yourself one of the lucky few in that position. After all, given today’s shaky economy, more and more homeowners are finding themselves foregoing fancy window treatments in favor of paying for life’s essentials, such as groceries, heat, and electricity.

If your home décor budget has suddenly grown quite limited, then don’t despair. With the proper planning, you might actually be able to stretch those dollars pretty far. As the proud owner and design director of Signature Interiors, Mark Needleman agrees that it’s perfectly possible to incorporate style and pizzazz into a home without spending a small fortune in the process. To make the most of your money, take note of the following tips for decorating your home on a budget:

Try to use or add to what you already have

One of the best ways to maximize your home decorating budget is to take advantage of the items that you own. Instead of buying a brand new lamp, try salvaging a sturdy base and solely replacing an older shade. Rather than get rid of a plain, boring bedspread, dress it up with a colorful throw blanket. By being a bit more forgiving with your current set of belongings, you might be able to spare yourself the expense of forking over the big bucks in favor of brand new stuff.

Don’t be afraid of the chain stores or thrift shops
When dealing with a limited home décor budget, try to remind yourself that not everything that gets displayed in your house needs to be fancy. For plainer, run-of-the-mill items such as neutral-colored rugs, tablecloths, and doormats, there’s no reason to go high-end when you can visit a chain store or thrift shop and purchase these things on the cheap. If you happen to have expensive tastes, then you’re better off visiting the classier shops only for decorative pieces such as chandeliers, artwork, and framed mirrors – items that are far more likely to catch someone’s eye.

Accessorize
The right accessories can really make a difference within a home, and can often times be far less expensive than standard fixtures or furnishings. If you’ve got a limited budget, then focus on a few key moderately-priced items that can really add to your home’s atmosphere. A nice-looking bowl filled with glass beads or even seasonal fruit can turn a lackluster coffee table into an interesting conversation piece, and a unique vase or photograph can make up for an otherwise boring dining room hutch. By choosing some accessories that truly have a ring of quality about them, you can transform your home and still have some money to spare.

Take advantage of nice flooring
While area rugs can make attractive additions to most homes, they don’t tend to come cheap. If you happen to be graced with nice carpet or fine hardwood flooring throughout your home, then take “floor décor” out of the equation and instead focus your efforts on the areas that are truly in need of some touch-ups.

Dress up your windows
When it comes to home décor, one of the best ways to make the most of a limited budget is to dress up your windows. The right window treatments can really work to transform a room, and some options out there are actually reasonably-priced. By adding a nice set of shades or hanging some curtains, you can turn an otherwise plain room into a true visual delight.

Remember that paint is cheap
If you’re looking to liven up your home but don’t have a lot of money to spend, then consider incorporating an accent wall using a nice coat of paint. It’s a much cheaper alternative to adding artwork, and you can even make a fun project out of the task.

Keep your decorative endeavors in check
When it comes to decorating, the statement “less is more” tends to really hold true. If you have limited funds to begin with, then don’t go overboard trying to spruce up every nook and cranny of your home. Instead, focus your efforts on a few new decorative fixtures or pieces and let those items take the spotlight. By keeping your decorative efforts in check, you’ll be able to save yourself some money while avoiding the mistake of cluttering your home with useless objects that will only end up detracting from one another.
