Preventing Disaster Via Plumbing Maintenance

Dave Cass | January 19, 2011

Although Cass Plumbing, Inc. is located in Tampa, Florida and offers Tampa emergency plumbing, owner Dave Cass says there have been “no real bad winds or hurricanes so far. We don’t run into too many hurricanes here.”

Tampa may be in Florida, but it doesn’t see the same hurricane activity you get up in the Panhandle or on the Gulf Coast in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. So when it comes to Tampa emergency plumbing, there are other reasons why Cass’s steady, cool-headed crew has to get involved.

Because Cass’s team isn’t concerned with disaster response the way some plumbers are in Mobile, Alabama, for example, Cass stresses the preventive side of his business. He believes that Tampa emergency plumbing is all about preventive measures.

Cass frequently discusses preventive measures with his clients, such as making sure they know where the shut-off valves are for their plumbing system. Why does Cass teach his clients about the shut-off valve? Here’s why: If something happens in a house, then at least there won’t be running water going out of control from a leak. It’s as easy as shutting the valve if anything threatening seems about to happen to the house.

Cass says that in the last couple of months, Cass Plumbing, Inc., has been “pushing for more home inspections.” During these inspections, Cass uses the time not only to check off a number of safety points on a house, but to instruct his clients in preventive maintenance. While he’s the plumber and relies on his and his team’s knowledge of plumbing for business success, Cass believes that part of his success rests in his clients’ knowing how to do a few things themselves. Cass also shows his clients where the gas shut-off valves are. “Fifty percent of homes here are on gas heat,” he says. “You need to know where the gas shutoffs are. Because if, in the event of a disaster, the house gets knocked down, you want both the gas and water to be off.” That could prevent further deterioration of the house and property, and in the case of gas, that could prevent an explosion.

In addition to his educational approach, Cass provides a number of services to maintain safety after a disaster. For example, if a fire or flood occurs, and a house is partially ruined, Cass and his team will go in, clean up, and drain the heaters. Although this isn’t preventive in the sense of avoiding destruction in the first place, it is preventive in the sense of halting any further damage to the property or neighboring properties.

Cass constantly stresses preventive maintenance when it comes to household plumbing systems. But when disaster can’t be prevented, Cass Plumbing, Inc. is equipped to enter the scene and prevent further damage.
