Painting an Accent Wall

Harold Howard | February 3, 2010

Harold Howard is the owner of Harold Howard’s Painting Service, which is based in Columbia, Maryland, and serves Howard, Baltimore, Ann Arundel, Carroll, and Hartford counties. Along with both residential and commercial painting services, his company also offers drywall installation, wallpaper removal, and more. Howard says he almost always defers to the customer when it’s time to choose a paint or wallpaper color. But having worked in the painting business for over two decades, he does know quite a bit about what colors have been trendy over the years. Here, he explains the growing popularity of accent walls and bright colors.

The popularity of accent walls is on the rise. I see them much more now than in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, people were more conservative with colors and generally painted their walls neutral colors. But now, people are back to liking a little bit more color and punch — so they choose bright accent walls. More books, magazines, and TV shows on home decorating are showing people how to be more creative with color, and they are responding to that.

An accent wall is simply a wall that’s a different color than the rest of the walls in a room. Accent walls allow you to be more experimental with color: People often choose bright, fun, and different colors for these in order to try something new, but not overwhelm the entire room.

How do you choose an accent wall color? What I often suggest to customers is to choose two or three of their favorite shades, buy a sample amount of paint, and try them out on your wall. At Harold Howard’s Painting Service, we provide the sample painting service for free — you only have to buy the sample paint. Our company pays for all materials such as rollers and brushes.

Accenting your wall with wallpaper instead of paint is another option. Many people these days, if they choose to decorate with wallpaper (which is not as popular as it used to be), like to accent one wall rather than wallpaper all four walls of a room. The rest of the room gets painted. This can have aesthetically pleasing results.

When choosing the right paint or wallpaper to accent a wall, we at Harold Howard’s Painting Service ultimately defer to the customer to make his own decision. And if you would like to get the help of a decorator, we are happy to recommend one.
