Looking for ways to maintain your swimming pool without hurting the environment? Fred Wagner has all the advice. As the president of Poolman in Phoenix Arizona, he oversees a company that services more than 5,600 pools each week.
Increasingly, the swimming pool industry is moving towards more environmentally friendly ways of keeping people’s pools maintained. One of the first things that pool owners can do, though, is to think about having a cartridge filter installed.
There are some real benefits to cartridge filters, and one of those is that you do not have to backwash the pool as much with one. So since you are not backwashing with that type of filter, you are not wasting nearly as much water as is the case with some other types of pool filters that people commonly have.
There is always a balance when you are trying to be eco-friendly, though, so there is a bit of a negative side to cartridge filters, too. If you do not ever backwash your pool, then what happens is all the calcium and everything else is never reduced in the water. To better explain—when you put water into your swimming pool, it always has calcium in it. Over time, the water evaporates, but the calcium stays there. So, when it comes time to backwashing your pool, you are taking out the higher-calcium water and adding in lower-calcium water.
If you never backwash your pool, which can be the case with some cartridge filter pools, then the calcium in the water just gets higher and higher and higher. And then, eventually, you might have to drain your pool every couple of years depending on the calcium hardness in your area. Calcium levels in your pool are important because the calcium hardness is essential to your pool’s surface not getting stained or anything else.
Another often-neglected thing that people can do to improve the eco-friendliness of their pools is to have new motors or pumps installed. I think that is one of the least talked about things for a lot of pool owners. Some people have pool pumps that are 20 or 30 years old. And obviously, these types of devices are about as far from energy efficient as you can get.
They have many two-speed pumps on the market now — also known as variable speed pumps — that take less energy to run than the older models. And obviously, any device that takes less energy to run will be better for the environment as well as your electrical bills.
Plenty of eco-friendly pool systems are available for people today. The main issue just is that people do not pay enough attention to their pool pumps and motors, so they do not know when it is time to upgrade to a newer, more energy-efficient model. But, if more people paid attention to their swimming pool pumps and motors, and upgraded them to the modern motors, then we could definitely be cutting everyone’s energy costs each month without any real sacrifice at all.
