Linda Miller-deBerard runs Confidential Care Professional Counseling, based in Colleyville, Texas, which specializes in treatment of women’s issues, marriage counseling and mood disorders. Here, she talks about how couples can tell their relationship may be in trouble, and why it’s important to take action once some of the cracks appear.
When people first meet, we are attracted to people who have qualities opposite to us, and there is a romantic attraction that literally changes our brain chemistry. In that romantic euphoria we are unable to see potential problems.
Once the relationship goes into real life, however, we might begin to experience conflict. That’s when we start to see signs of the relationship being in trouble.
Here are some signs that you and your partner could benefit from couples counseling:
- Your relationship seems to take a back seat to everything else
- You and your partner keep arguing about the same subjects
- You feel angry, resentful, misunderstood or hurt much of the time
- You and your partner get along well, you just want to feel closer
- You feel hopeless and are considering divorce.
Couples counsellng can teach you safe communication that can regrow connection, help you find compromises to even the most difficult situations. Being able to communicate without fear your other half will criticize or make damaging comments directed toward you is one big part of counseling, as is making a commitment to seeing things through and making time for each other.
It can be very helpful to see a couples counselor if you believe your relationship is in trouble. It can be worthwhile even if only one of you wants to attend. Make an appointment today.
