Tips to Keep Sinks Unclogged

Rick Hedge | March 10, 2010

What you put into your kitchen and your bathroom sinks will impact how well these drains work, says Rick Hedge, president and owner of The Plumber’s Plumber, located in Southwestern Florida. Here, Hedge gives some insider tips on keeping your drains draining properly, and what to do when they don’t.

Hair is one of the most common materials that can cause sinks to become clogged, or cause them to drain poorly. By minimizing the hair in the sink and being observant on how much hair is going down the drain, you can keep your sink draining better and prevent it from becoming clogged.

Also, watch what is being put in your sink at all times, and not just hair. Be careful about what you put in to fix a clog. The benefit of the DrainForce bacteria treatment, an environmentally friendly treatment for drains which we recommend to all our customers, is that this product can also help keep sink drains draining properly at all times.

Grease

Kitchen grease is lethal for kitchen sinks. We recommend that no solids or kitchen waste whatsoever be put down the kitchen drain. If you have cooking oil, it should not be thrown down the drain. Excessive cooking oil put into the drain, if the house is on a septic system, will clog and destroy the drain field in the septic system, and lead to expensive repair costs.

We also advise people not to get too comfortable with garbage disposals. They do work great when they are not abused. But the best thing we advise, if possible, is to minimize the amount of kitchen waste that that you put into kitchen sink, even if there is a disposal.

Try Unclogging First

If you have a clog, you should try to unclog it yourself first before calling in a plumber. If you have a kitchen sink with two bowls, we first advise people to plunge the sink. But when you plunge it, you have to make sure you cover one of the bowls while you plunge the other. After you do that, if it does not work, that is when we advise calling in the plumber.

At The Plumber’s Plumber, we are on hand 24/7 to help you with whatever plumbing problem you have, no matter how large or how small. Oftentimes, we can diagnose your problem on the phone, and give you a quote right then and there. We guarantee that you will talk to a real live plumber when you phone. Give us a call today.
