All too often plumbers find defects in drain pipes, which can be caused by a variety of reasons. Rick Hedge is president and owner of The Plumber’s Plumber, based in Southwestern Florida, and talks here about the various reasons pipes become defective.

As plumbers, we are well aware of things that can go wrong when it comes to plumbing, and we know how to correct them when they do. All too often, the fault lies in some drain pipe defect. Your pipes can leak for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Tree roots grow into pipes oftentimes, which causes damage and means that the pipe will need to be repaired or replaced.
  • If a plumber did not glue or clean the PVC pipe properly, then tree roots can grow into the pipe as well, causing damage and the need for replacement.
  • Another defect that we run into is an offset pipe connection. What that means is that either two pipes were joined together improperly in the past by a plumber, or the ground has shifted since the pipes were laid, creating a heavy lip in the pipe, causing waste to get caught, and therefore results in a blockage.
  • Sometimes we find a defect because the pipes get squashed, either by the weight of the ground above them, or because a tree will grow and tend to squash them. When the pipes are originally installed, the tree might have been small. But after 20 or 30 years, that tree can grow big and cause a problem for the pipes underneath it.
  • Another problem with drain pipes is infiltration, where the groundwater or rain water goes into the sewer and the drain pipes. When that happens, local municipalities or utility companies have to treat unnecessary water — water that really should not need to be treated. This is why there is a big movement to repair underground facilities.
  • Exfiltration is yet another problem we often see, where the sewer sanitary drainage reaches outside the pipe and pollutes the earth. So if the pipe is not sealed properly, the sewer water will leave the pipe and pollute the environment.

We can fix all these pipe defects by implementing a variety of methods. Call The Plumber’s Plumber today, and see what we can do for you.
