Area and Oriental Rug Cleaning

Jon Ellowitz | August 14, 2009

An area and oriental rug cleaning can successfully beat out the dirt, gently shampoo and rinse the rug, and carefully dry it.

What are oriental and area rugs?

Oriental rugs are handmade carpets. They are knotted or woven, intricate, and colorful. Depending on where they’re from, they display a wealth of symbols, geometric patterns, and even pictorial arrangements. If what might be passing as an “oriental rug” is made by a machine, it is therefore not truly an oriental rug.

These beauties originated from a sweeping geographic area, from China to Turkey. Based on its origins, an oriental rug can be identified as Persian, Anatolian, Kurdish, Caucasian, Turkestanian, Tibetan, and Chinese (among others).

Area rugs are made of woven or felted fibers with finished edges. Ideally, these rugs are also handmade, though they might not be classified as oriental rugs because of differences in patterns and history.

How does oriental and area rug cleaning work?

An area and oriental rug cleaning service uses a multi-step process that includes hi-tech as well as hands-on approaches. These eight steps guide the process.

  1. The rug is hand-inspected. Often, every inch of the rug gets this special treatment.
  2. Removing dirt. This is one of the most important parts of the process because it is responsible not only for preparing the carpet for cleaning, but for knocking out the bulk of dirt buildup. This process is known as dry soil removal. Loose soil that is trapped in the fibers of the rug is literally beaten out through vibration. A vibrating machine is rolled over the whole surface of the rug slowly. Forty thousand gentle vibrations per minute loosen the imbedded dirt. It takes about half an hour for the rug vibrator to cover a smaller rug, but could take hours for larger rugs. This industrial dusting process will knock out dirt that a vacuum could never remove.
  3. The rug is dye-tested to determine the stability of its many delicate colors. This is to insure that they will not bleed during washing, shampooing, and rinsing.
  4. Every color is tested. If there are 20 identifiable dyes, then 20 dye tests will be performed. It’s a time-consuming process, but integral, because if it’s not performed, the rug could be ruined. Each color may take 1 to 2 hours or up to 24 hours for testing.
  5. The rug is mildly shampooed and completely submersed in cold, purified water. This process flushes out all the remaining impurities that could be left behind after industrial dusting.
  6. The rug is rinsed, and prepared for drying. It goes through a hydraulic wringer to squeeze out the water it’s holding after washing and rinsing.
  7. In order to dry, the rug is either hung or set on a drying block. The way it’s dried will depend on the weave of the rug, because it’s safer to dry some rugs by hanging them, and others by letting them sit flat.
  8. After the rug is dry, the area and oriental rug cleaners will groom and brush it by hand. The grooming and brushing movements depend on the direction of the rug’s fibers. The result is a clean, soft rug.

The room where the rugs are drying is heated and dehumidified. Additionally, a system of rotating air movement is applied to the room to help quicken the drying time. It’s best for rugs to dry faster because the longer they are wet, the likelier mold or mildew could develop. Mold and mildew could easily ruin expensive oriental and area rugs.

Who should use this service?

Area and oriental rugs are obviously a big investment, but they are an aesthetically attractive contribution to a beautiful living space. That’s why they deserve the best treatment available. Dirt buildup doesn’t only diminish the appearance of these rugs, but it can hurt their value. You’re probably interested in deeply cleaning almost every particle of dust out of your expensive rugs. But you may want also to preserve their value. A clean rug retains its value, its appearance, and, ultimately, the hygiene of a home (because allergens build up in unattended rugs).
