Pool Cleaning Supplies You Need

Bruce Wetterer | January 25, 2010

As the owner of Imperial Pool and Spa Services in Indianapolis, Indiana, Bruce Wetterer knows what it takes to make your pool glisten. He also knows that it doesn’t take the world’s fanciest and high-tech tools to get the job done. Here, he explains the supplies every pool owner should have to consistently keep his pool clean.

  • A brush to scrub away dirt and grime that is stuck to the walls and floor of your pool.
  • Vacuum and pool hose for cleaning up particles that have sunk to the floor of you pool.
  • A skimmer to remove debris such as leaves and bugs that is floating on the surface of the water.
  • An extra long pole that can be attached to brushes and skimmers so that you can clean the pool without getting into the water.
  • A Sheppard’s hook that can be extended into the pool for support if anyone was to start drowning.
  • Chlorine to sanitize your pool and keep bacteria and algae from growing.
  • Muriatic acid can change the pH level of your pool up if it’s too acidic.
  • Baking soda to stabilize water it is too alkaline.
  • Any special chemicals that are unique to your pools situation whether you are prone to algae growth or too much copper or metal is in the pool.

In addition to these basic supplies, Wetterer also shares tips for keeping your pool clean while it is in use.

  • Set a schedule to test your water’s pH and chlorine levels and add the required chemicals as needed.
  • Patch cracks in the siding of your pool as soon as you notice them so they don’t spread.
  • Remove pool toys and chairs from the water when not in use unless you have a cleaning problem. If that’s the case, then put all your rafts and toys into the pool for a major cleaning either using chlorine or a shock treatment to remove any dirt or bacteria that they might be bringing into your pool.

Or, to ensure that your pool is always in top shape and desirable, consider hiring a servicing company who can visit your house regularly to clean the pool entirely and test and treat your water.

About Bruce Wetterer

Author Name

Bruce Wetterer, owner of Imperial Pool and Spa Services in Indianapolis, Indiana, says his informal pool business began at the age of 11 when his father handed over the responsibility of maintaining their family pool. From there, Wetterer extended his pool servicing to include nearby neighbors and continued doing so throughout his years of high school and during his time as an undergraduate at Indiana University. Following college, Wetterer said he went into the corporate world but soon realized that he wasn’t a “suit and tie” kind of guy. Soon after, he returned to servicing pools and spas and officially purchased Imperial in 1983. In the following 25 years, the business has transformed into a full service company that handles every facet of pool, spa and hot-tub servicing.
