Why to Replace Your Windows

Ryan Lawrence | September 22, 2009

Most people don’t think a lot about the windows in their home until one breaks. A small hole punched in by hail, a tree branch, or a poorly aimed baseball may seem like a simple fix. However, when an aging window wears out around the frame, simple repair might not be enough. If your windows are creaking, grinding or closing unexpectedly; or if they are leaking air around the frame, you may need complete window replacement.

What Is Window Replacement?

Obviously, window replacement involves the removal of a home’s old windows and the installation of new ones. But, there is a lot more to it than that. Professional window replacement usually involves an upgrade in energy efficiency. Modern windows trap in warm and cool air better than their older counterparts and a professional installation ensures that the windows are properly insulated.

There are generally two types of window replacement. Full frame involves the replacement of the entire window and frame. It’s usually recommended when frames are deteriorating or when brand new styles and schemes are desired. Insert replacement, on the other hand, involves little or no disruption of the walls, trim or exterior and is generally recommended when window frames are in good condition and overall styles are to remain unchanged.

Who Needs Window Replacement?

Insulation failure is a prime reason to have your windows replaced. Subtle variations in temperature near a window can indicate that air is leaking in. This is a sure sign that the window is not properly insulated. Use your bare hand to check for warm spots in the summer and cool spots in the winter. You can also use a candle to check for air flowing in around the window’s edge. If the flame acts disturbed, you can be reasonably sure that something is wrong.

Malfunction in general operation is also cause for window replacement. Over time, shifts in a home’s foundation can cause damage to window frames. If your windows creak or squeal when you open or close them, or if you need a prop of some sort to keep them from falling shut, you may need window replacement.

Benefits of Window Replacement

Most people would be shocked if they knew just how much extra energy it takes to heat and cool a home with poorly sealed and insulated windows. New, efficient, modern windows can literally save you hundreds of dollars each year in utility costs.

The benefits associated with window replacement aren’t all financial. New windows and window frames often represent the crown jewel in many interior home remodeling projects. There are a variety of styles of windows including, awning, casement, double hung, gliding, picture and bay windows, jalousie, hopper and many more. Mix in some dark-stained or glossy wood frames and sills and you can really infuse beauty into a lackluster room.

Risks Associated With Aging, Broken Windows

Obviously, when windows don’t function correctly, they can be a real nuisance. However, aging or broken windows can also occasionally cause injury to you, your family and your pocketbook. A window that closes suddenly and without warning can cause injury to hands and heads alike. Also, when your home loses air through old, poorly sealed windows, your utility costs can soar. Many people often underestimate just how much money is wasted due to poorly insulated windows and doors. For some larger homes, the costs can soar into the high hundreds each year.

The Bottom Line

Although it may appear easy enough, window replacement is no simple task. Professional window installation involves exact measurements, and special techniques to ensure that the windows will last and be energy efficient. This can make the process a bit expensive in certain situations. Still, the overall savings in energy costs can really add up over the years making professional window replacement a sound investment.
