Why Do Carpet Stains Come Back after a Cleaning?

Scott Howard | October 25, 2010

Nearly every homeowner has experienced the same frustrating scenario: carpet stains that seem to be gone after a cleaning, but quickly return in the following days. Why do carpet stains so often come back after a cleaning? According to Scott Howard of Carbonated Solutions of West Texas, reappearing stains can be due to ineffective cleaning or cleaning product residue. Howard, whose company offers carpet cleaning in Lubbock, Texas and the surrounding areas, believes that carbonated cleaning solutions offer the best defense against recurring stains, along with being safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Why Stains Come Back

“Most of the time when stains come back, it’s simply due to the fact that the original stain was sticky, and therefore attracted dirt,” Howard explains. “If you remove the dirt but don’t remove the underlying sticky substance, dirt will be attracted to it again in the future, creating the illusion that the original stain has come back.” Each time you vacuum your carpet, he says, you’ll be picking up dirt from the other areas of your carpet but depositing it on the sticky area instead.

Some cleaning methods, he says, can actually make this problem worse by leaving behind a sticky detergent residue which can further attract dirt and make it more difficult for your carpet to resist staining in the future. “Steam cleaners in particular use lots of heavy soaps and detergents,” he says. “If you don’t get those products rinsed completely out, you’re going to see the carpet becoming soiled very quickly after your cleaning.”

When a Bargain’s not a Bargain

If you want to avoid those infamous reappearing carpets stains, Howard says, then don’t fall for the “cheap” guys’ special offers. “Every now and then you’ll see a coupon for a $30 carpet cleaning,” he says. “Be aware that if you go for a deal like that, you’re very likely going to get exactly what you’ve paid for.” A bargain is only a bargain, he says, if your carpets are cleaned to your satisfaction.

Rather than choosing a carpet cleaner based solely on price, Howard recommends considering other factors as well. “Of course you should be charged a fair price,” he says, “but it’s also important to consider who you’re hiring to do the work – their methods, their qualifications, and their reputation within the community.”

The Carbonated Solutions Advantage

According to Howard, the Carbonated Solutions process offers excellent results with no sticky residue, no harsh chemicals, no soaps and no detergents. Instead, your carpets are cleaned using a special carbonated cleaning solution that reaches deep into the carpet fiber to lift dust and dirt to the surface, where it can be removed easily. “The process is safe, simple and environmentally friendly,” Howard says. “And you can be confident that once stains are gone, they’re gone for good.”
