What Are Dental Grills?

Morey Furman | January 17, 2010

Bring on the bling! But be careful. If you decide to get a dental grill, make sure you take it off at night and regularly clean under it, says Dr. Morey Furman. He recently opened his own private dental practice, The Dental Office of Dr. Morey Furman in Garden City, New York, offering personalized quality care with an emphasis on cosmetics and the latest in materials, techniques and innovations. So he knows a bit about dental jewelry, and how to take care of it - and your teeth.

Dental grills are other words for dental jewelry; it’s the bling that young people put on the front of their teeth. I have had a few ask me to do it, but mostly they are not done by dentists’ they are done by jewelers, at least the high-end stuff.

Dental grills kind of snap on to the teeth, but they are not glued to the teeth. So you can take them on and off. And you should. They are not really good for teeth; they are not healthy to keep on because of plaque under them can stain on the teeth; they can excessively wear the enamel down and make your teeth sensitive. Also, you need to be able to clean under them for optimal dental hygiene.

If you are smart and careful, if you take the dental grills off at night and brush your teeth routinely, and do not sleep with them or chew with them, they should not harm to you. But if you are not careful, they can scratch the teeth and the wear of putting them in and taking them out can wear the enamel down. And, of course, if you accidentally chew on them, they can break your teeth.

Beautiful Bling

Gold crowns are another type of dental jewelry. People want all-gold crowns or gold swedge crowns, which are pieces of gold that snap on over the tooth to give you a tooth that appears to made out of gold. It’s all about tooth bling.

Another type of popular tooth jewelry, and obviously we are talking high end here, is when rappers put gold and platinum jewels on their teeth. Pure gold is fine, but for average people who go out and buy these things, they may use stuff that has metal in it that is not healthy. Some metals can cause allergic reactions or irritate the gum. So be careful what you buy, and only buy the best.

If you decide to have a jewel actually bonded on to your teeth, it can be eventually removed in the same fashion as an orthodontic bracket. Some dentists claim the enamel will not be scratched. But, if you decide to go down this route, just make sure you have a dentist put on your bling for you, not a jeweler.
