How Long Does Shower Door Installation Take?

Robby Smith | December 3, 2010

Are you tired of the dull, grimy look of your current shower door? Or worse, are you sick of shower curtains and liners that seem to always collect mold? If your answer to either of these questions is “yes” and you live in the Marietta, Georgia area, new shower doors may be just what you need. With this small but significant change, you can breathe new life into your home’s bathroom.

According to Robby Smith, whose company, Superior Shower Doors LLC, specializes in shower door installation in Marietta and the surrounding areas, you are less than a week away from replacing your old shower door or curtain. From estimates and measurements to the final placement of the door, the entire project is generally completed within three to five days.

After the proper measurements have been taken and the correct materials gathered, the installation of your new shower door naturally starts with the removal of the existing one. Because Superior Shower Doors LLC strives to meet all of their clients’ needs, the old shower door is properly disposed of for you so that you don’t have to worry about scheduling a special trash pickup or the possibility of broken glass on your property. Once the installer actually begins fitting your new door into the shower, the rest of the job takes only a few hours.

Though the shower door installation process is generally the same from home to home, Smith and his team do have to account for a few different variables in each bathroom. Mainly, an installer has to consider the type of door chosen.

If you have opted for a frameless door, Smith explains, then there needs to be a stud on the hinge side of the door and another stud running behind the tiles of the shower walls. Since the door is heavy, these studs help shift the weight away from the tiles. The tiles in the bathroom, Smith says, would not otherwise be able to support the load of the entire door.

Another thing to consider, Smith continues, is the slope of the curb that separates the shower floor from the bathroom floor. It needs to have a slight incline to ensure that when water hits the shower door, it runs back toward the drain. Both of these factors, Smith says, are taken care of by the company who installs the tile in your shower; 75% of the time, these measures are already in place, but if not, the necessary studs can be added. Once your door has been secured and caulking has been added around the shower encasement, Smith recommends allowing 24 hours to pass before using your shower to allow everything to dry.

If you’ve been looking for a quick and easy way to update your bathroom but cannot afford a complete remodel, then you may be surprised at the transformation a new shower door can provide. And, unlike tearing out old tile or replacing all of the fixtures in the room, shower door replacement is quick and stress-free.
