James Brown Jr is operations manager of 1-800 Dump Runs of Hartford LLC, located in Manchester, Connecticut. A professional waste management firm, it differs from others in that it can either provide a dumpster, or come in and take away the debris for you. Here, he explains why his business is unique in its field.
As leaders in professional waste management, we service both commercial and residential customers. We are a professional company in that we are licensed and insured with set guidelines, and we have a set protocol that we follow.
Some of the more fly-by-night people do what we do out of their pickup trucks but they are not insured and are not professionals like a real commercial waste company. We are not like that as we are professionals in the business and it shows in the quality of the work we do. And what differentiates us from some of the smaller companies is obvious to our customers, who come back to us time and time again.
Last year, a lot of mom and pop companies that suddenly sprung up, with a couple of guys doing it out the back of the pickup. It’s true that we started small, with a single pickup truck and wooden side walls, and kind of built our business from there. We started in that fashion years ago, and we eventually evolved to where we are today. But we are a little different from others as we were licensed and insured from the beginning.
Double-Faceted Business
We have two facets to our business, two diverse areas in which we operate. We have a dumpster rental business where we provide commercial containers. They are available to anyone from a homeowner cleaning out their basement or doing small renovations, to large commercial customers that are doing bigger things.
An example of that is that we have recently done commercial accounts for a major store’s renovations, which you can imagine was a big operation. For dumpsters, we would do anything as small as a six cubic yard container up to multiple 30-yard containers, entirely depending on the customer’s needs.
The other facet to our business is more niche-based, what we call the dump run service. With that service, we provide two staff members on every run, and it’s based on a 12-yard container. We take a 12-yard dumpster, which is the middle-of-the-road dumpster in the industry, and split it into thirds. So our two staff members will come out and physically load the material into the dumpster.
It’s easy: The customers point to the material they want removed and the staff takes it from whenever it is to the dump. That dump run service ranges from a single-item pickup on up to the huge jobs. The largest facility we have cleared was a 27,000 square foot facility. That’s what professional waste management is all about — doing any job, no matter how large or how small, and doing it to highest standards.
