Getting Curb Appeal on a Budget

Dan Schaefer | February 18, 2010

People always say that you should not judge a book by its over, yet curb appeal should never be under-estimated. Making your home more attractive on the outside will make people feel it’s better on the inside as well, says Dan Schaefer, owner of Providence Renovation, LLC, a residential and commercial restoration, and remodeling company based in Phoenix. Here, he gives tips on how to make your house look a lot better — on a budget.

Building value to your home’s exterior, or what is called curb appeal, is important. When your home looks great on the inside, potential buyers will leap at the chance to see what is on the inside.

However, many people suggest adding curb appeal by spending tens of thousands of dollars, when that’s not really necessary. There are several affordable ways to create curb appeal on a budget, and to get buyers interested in your home.

Some ideas we have are:

  • Invest in a new front door.
  • Give the home a new coat of paint.
  • Create a front patio/sitting area with a roof and lighting.
  • Build a small half wall, creating a barrier between the front of the house and the door.
  • Have a small path or small walkway leading to the door that could even be lighted.
  • Invest in new windows, or spruce up your old windows.
  • Add custom-made wooden shutters.
  • Construct a new pathway with flagstone and flowers.
  • Buy new light fixtures on your porch.

Making sure that potential buyers get a fantastic first impression of your home is important. With a little forethought and creativity (and not much money), you can make your home look fresh and new from the outside, quickly and easily. In today’s tough real estate market, this is important now more than ever.

At Providence Renovation, we advise our clients on all aspects of home renovation, and can advise on the best ways to improve your home’s curb appeal as well. Give us a call today for advice and inspiration, we’re here to help!
