What is Environmental Pest Control?

Jon Nelson | March 1, 2010

You may have never heard of the budding business of environmental pest control, nor have you ever had a company of this caliber visit your home. However, chances are you will love the services that they provide, and the special attention they pay to your health and the safety of the environment. To explain in further detail what these companies have to offer, and what you can expect during their visit to your home, Jon Nelson of Precision Environmental, a company in California that specializes in environmental inspections and pest control, lends his expertise.

Obviously, when you have bugs in your home or mold on your walls, you’re desperate to get rid of them. You’ve always thought of your home as clean and you’ll do anything to get it to meet your standards. Unfortunately, in your haste, you may actually be contaminating your home with harmful chemicals. Yes, these sprays and gels may kill the pests, but what are they doing to your family and the environment? The truth is these chemicals are unhealthy. And it’s likely that these “quick fixes” aren’t your best option.

That’s where a company like Precision Environmental comes in. Since 1982 when the business was first developed, they have been searching for ways to rid homes of pests and bacteria while still remaining environmentally conscious — starting with asbestos removal. Since then, they (and similar companies) have developed particular methods for removing termites, bed bugs, mold and viruses safely and thoroughly. One of the greatest tools, says Nelson, is the use of heat, particularly ThermaPureHeat. This thermal process replaces traditional fumigation, and is a great new method for treating mold and bacteria in homes.

What to Expect

So, you’ve decided that using a company like Precision Environmental is the right choice for you and your family’s pest control needs. But, what can you expect when the team arrives at your home?

Well, says Jon Nelson, it will pretty much be a similar experience as to when any other pest control company comes to your house. Of course, that is without the harsh chemicals, foul odors and possibly harmful affects to your family and pets.

Crews arrive in plain trucks and are dressed professionally, says Nelson. Everything about the company is professional, he adds. They also take the proper precautions to protect any surfaces they will be walking on. For instance, he says, if specialists are going to work in the bathroom, the doorway and walkway will be covered to make sure nothing is scratched and that no dirt is tracked through the home.

The type of equipment that will arrive with the crew depends completely upon the project, explains Nelson. It can be hand tools, small air filtration systems, large trailers, or rounded heaters. For the most, he adds, it takes roughly one to two hours to make sure that the area is properly secured and that there is no risk of cross contamination. In some cases, you may be asked to leave your home, especially if high temperatures are going to be used to sterilize any rooms. Then, after the team has completed their job, they will properly bag the contaminated materials, dispose of the waste and make sure your home is in the same condition as when they arrived.
