The Dangers of Do-It-Yourself Electrical Repair

Ryan Lawrence | September 11, 2009

Most people have a healthy fear of electricity and wouldn’t even consider attempting electrical repair on their own. However, others overestimate their handyman skills and put themselves and their family at risk. Unlike many home repair projects, those that involve electricity are best left to the professionals. It just doesn’t matter how seasoned a do-it-yourselfer you are; electric repair is a different animal. Although you may be able to cut a pretty straight line with a paint brush or hang sheetrock fast as the wind; if you’re considering do-it-yourself electrical repair and you are not trained to work with electricity, you’re taking one heck of a risk.

What Is Professional Electrical Repair?

Most people think they have an idea of what an electrician is doing when he fiddles with the wiring in the walls. However, the process is a lot more complicated than it seems. Electrical repair requires time, a ton of patience, and a lot of know-how. Professional electricians are trained to understand the intricacies of electrical systems as a whole, and they’re paid well for it. You can trust a qualified electrician to ground your electrical wiring and insulate it to prevent the risk of fire and deadly electric shock. Electrical work performed by an amateur can lead to malfunctions that can cause injuries, start fires and even lead to death.

Who Needs An Electrical Contractor?

There are a variety reasons why you may need some sort of electrical repair. Your automatic garage door may begin to malfunction in some way or it might quit working entirely. You might be frustrated when you feel that a switch controls the wrong light. Or, you may notice that one or more outlets in your home fails to produce any power at all. Some people require electrical repair for appliances that go on the fritz including ovens, dishwashers, clothes washing machines and dryers. In severe cases, you may notice heat emanating from a light switch plate or an electrical outlet when you touch it. Or, you might see sparks when you plug an appliance in. Whatever the reason, unless you are trained to work with electrical wiring, you need the help of a qualified professional electrician.

Benefits of Hiring An Electrical Contractor

When all hell breaks loose, most people won’t hesitate to call an electrical contractor. However, many people don’t realize why they should rely on a professional for even the smallest of electrical repairs. A simple project like replacing a light fixture can be more complex than the homeowner anticipates. Often, the old wiring behind the fixture can become brittle and fray or break. Qualified electricians replace old wiring any time they replace a light fixture, a light switch or an outlet. Although, you may think you’re capable of switching out an old fixture, outlet or switch, remember that the act of replacing the component is only half the battle. The wiring is the true key to the project and that’s where the potential danger lies.

Risks of Do-It-Yourself Electrical Repair

Obviously, one of the biggest dangers associated with do-it-yourself electrical repair is risk of electrocution. Many people are surprised to learn that thousands of people die each year due to electric shock. Many of these accidents occur because homeowners attempted what they thought was a simple electrical repair. The fact is that it doesn’t matter how simple you may think the project is. If you’re dealing with electricity in any way and you are untrained, you’re rolling the dice with some pretty high stakes.

The Bottom Line

Most everyone will require at least some sort of electrical repair at some point. Like most man-made products, wiring does have an expiration date. If you notice fuses continuously blowing, tripping circuit breakers, or heat or smoke emanating from electrical outlets, you should shut off your power and call a professional electrician immediately. And, although you may feel you are qualified to handle a little run of the mill electrical repair, remember that even projects that seem simple and easy can end in serious injury or even death. Unless you’re trained to work with electricity, leave all electrical repair to the professionals.
