Sitting in a classroom with 20 or so other students can make it hard for your child to get the attention he craves or that is necessary for learning stimulation. If you feel that your child’s grades are slipping, he is reluctant to go to school, or it’s a struggle getting homework done, then it may be time to consider contacting a tutoring service near your home. As Farhan Hussain, owner and director of Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services explains, there are a multitude of reasons why your child will benefit from the tutoring experience.
Provides personal attention: One-on-one in-home tutoring provides your child with the distinct attention that he cannot receive in the classroom. If your child is shy, or there just isn’t enough time for the teacher to answer all of his questions during class time, then he may begin to fall behind in his studies. However, when your child is alone with his tutor, he doesn’t have to worry about being criticized for his questions. And, subjects that are difficult can become the main focus of the sessions until he starts to feel more comfortable with the material.
Increases motivation and confidence: The task of the tutor assigned to your child is not only to review the subjects being taught in school. They are also there to construct the learning experience around your child’s specific interests. By taking the time to form a bond with your child, the tutor will become familiar with your child’s hobbies and goals and incorporate them into his review. Once learning becomes fun, you will see an increase in your child’s motivation to go to school. Similarly, when school work becomes more manageable and understandable, your child’s confidence in his studies and homework will increase as well.
Reduces competition: Even the most mundane or regular activities in the classroom can become a competition when your child is surrounded by peers. A weekly spelling test turns into a race to see who can get through it the fastest, and high grades become cause for bragging. With the pressure to fit in at an all time high during elementary and middle school years, your child might not give his homework the attention it needs, and in turn, feel poorly about himself when he receives the same grades as classmates. But, at home, with only a tutor around, the pressure of impressing other people disappears. Now, your son or daughter doesn’t have to worry about how fast he is getting through his homework. He can just relax and focus on getting it done correctly.
Improves grades: The tutors at Club Z! implement exercises and study skills that have been proven to lead to learning improvements with their clients. Hussain says that students who meet regularly with a tutor will see an improvement of a full letter grade higher in four to six weeks.
Allows your child to work at his own pace: Unlike your child’s teacher, tutors are not under a time constraint. The pressure of having to introduce numerous topics in an allotted amount of time is nonexistent in a tutoring session. Since there are no rules for how quickly things must progress, your child can spend all of the time necessary for him to clearly understand a subject. Additionally, the tutor does not have the responsibility of introducing any new material. The focus will only be placed on the current curriculum, so that your child will be able to keep up with the flow of the class back at school.
Strengthens study skills: Many students do poorly on tests because they are too nervous about getting a good grade. That apprehension hinders their ability to perform well. Tutors are masters at offering great stress-relieving techniques that your child can apply right up until test time. They will also provide him with advice for how to prepare for tests in the upcoming days so that they study gradually, instead of cramming the night before.
