Formal education is a right of every American citizen. While children may begrudgingly attend class every day, the attention and knowledge they receive in the classroom during their youngest years will begin to shape their future. Just as every child is unique, so are their learning habits and styles. Some students excel in math while others favor reading. Unfortunately, in a classroom setting a curriculum needs to be covered and some children seem to get lost in the shuffle. While teachers, superintendents and government programs work to ensure that each child gets the education he deserves, sometimes it may not be enough.
As the owner and director of Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services, Farhan Hussain has worked with children to enhance their academic performances. In his experience, he has seen many reasons why some students do not reach their full potential in the classroom. A few examples are below.
Overcrowded classroom
If you have ever visited your child’s class, before you know that a number of students are vying for one teacher’s attention. And while teachers are trained to handle the needs of numerous children at once, there is not enough time in the day to cover all the material while still ensuring that each child fully understands the topic.
Intimidation
Asking a question in class can be extremely intimidating. Your child may be afraid that his peers will make fun of him for not understanding the lesson, or he may be too shy to speak up. Even if your child thought that he understood the lesson in class, when it comes to homework, he may have questions that you may not be able to understand.
Not paying attention
Maybe your child daydreams or you may have a social butterfly who likes to talk to his friends or doodle instead of listening to the teacher. With so much visual and mental stimulation in a classroom, from posters, to pets, to best friends, tuning out important information does happen.
No motivation
Sometimes it is hard for children to grasp the bigger picture of the purpose of education. To them it may seem daunting to wake up early everyday and go to class where they learn things that they may not be interested in. While teachers often strive to make learning enjoyable, it is hard to meet the interests of all the children in the classroom. Not having a passion for what he is learning can lower morale and your child may just go through the motions of school without having a real passion for it.
If this sounds like something you’re experiencing at home, then contacting a local tutoring center might be the right solution for you. Your child’s tutor will work to answer his questions and concerns, and plan lessons and activities to conform to his personal interests. Club Z! has locations throughout the country, and if one isn’t in your area, seek out another professional service that can help get your son or daughter on the right track.
