Causes and Solutions for Acne Scarring

Gene Rubinstein | October 21, 2009

Acne has been a longstanding problem that has plagued millions of people for years. From small blemishes to constant breakouts, it has been a struggle for many to find a solution that works for them. And while most people outgrow acne in their early twenties, many continue to be affected for years to come. Gene Rubinstein, M.D., of the Dermatology and Laser Centre of Studio City, offers some explanations on what causes acne and how it can be treated with medical advances.

Acne occurs when the oil produced by sebaceous glands does not reach the surface of the skin but is instead trapped in tiny pores. The bacteria then thrive in the clogged pores, and when combined with pus, leak from the follicle into the surrounding tissue, thus forming the much dreaded pimple.

The most basic form of acne treatment includes topical antibiotics and antibacterials, oral antibiotics, astringents and exfoliants. However, determining an individual treatment plan for every patient is truly important, advises Dr. Rubinstein, because each patient will respond differently. And with so many effective acne treatments on the market, it is more possible than ever to find the right solution for you.

Even a mild case of adolescent acne can leave a constant reminder in the form of acne scarring. It is estimated that more than 12 million Americans suffer from varying degrees of acne scars which manifest in many forms including redness, depressions, uneven skin tone and enlarged pores. Laser manufacturers and doctors have been working for years to perfect treatments to help alleviate acne scarring and many advances have been made that are accessible to anyone looking to seek relief.

One of the most popular ways to erase scarring is through the use of lasers, either noninvasive types such as IPL and the V-Beam or minimally invasive lasers such as Fraxel II for patients with more severe scarring. Each laser technique is formulated to deal with varying levels and conditions of scarring to insure that each patient achieves the results that they desire.

IPL

The Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is used to reduce flat, superficial discoloration and even out skin tone. It may also be used in conjunction with the V- Beam which has been designed to help alleviate redness, inflations, rosacea and small facial vessels. Both lasers effects can be further intensified by the use of Photodynamic Therapy which uses a combination of a topical mediation applied to the skin which is the activated by laser light. On average three to five sessions are required for any of the laser combinations and patients usually see results that last for a year, with some people reporting long term clearing.

For more severe acne scars, such as depressions or elevated scars, patients may opt for Fraxel, which has been developed to reach the depths required for effective resurfacing. The treatment allows the skin to heal much quicker than if the entire area were treated by using the body’s natural healing mechanisms to create new and healthy tissue to replace prior imperfections.

After achieving the clear complexion desired, a number of supplemental treatments can ensure that the skin continues to look fresh and vibrant. The first of these is filler injections which can be used in depressions in the skin to help create a smooth surface.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is also a strong option in which a superficial layer of damaged skin is removed from the face. Microdermabrasion typically produces the most positive results when used with a topical acne medication treatment subscribed by a dermatologist. By removing the dead skin cells, the acne medications are able to penetrate the skin deeper providing faster results.

A last option for patients is chemical peels in which a solution burns the fine outer layers of the skin, creating a radiant new layer of skin. Healing from a chemical peel varies from patient to patient, however, varying anywhere from three days to three weeks before results are visible.

  1. I have had sever acne in the past and was left with unattractive scars on my face.

I purchased the Dr. Max Powers Scar Serum from their website online - it was medium expensive for a scar cream - because I needed a solution. The Max Powers Scar Cream does work well, but don't expect to see results instantly. You need to apply it regularly and consistently for about a month in order to see results. It really does work though.

My scars are much more toned down and less visible.
