Valet Attendants: Classy Option

Jon Ellowitz | August 7, 2009

Valet attendants often practice what’s called “stack parking.” They park vehicles two cars deep, like double parking.

What is a valet attendant service?

It’s going to be a big night. You’d rather worry about the wedding, or the momentous party that will mark a point in your life, or in the life a friend or family member. The last thing you want to worry about is what to do with all those cars that will be pulling up your driveway, parking along your street, or flooding the lot of the commercial event space you’ve rented.

You could let valet attendants take care of the work for you. Let’s see what it’s all about, because it may be the perfect solution for dealing with those hordes of approaching cars.

A valet service provides trained, professional employees to park and organize the guests’ vehicles. These trusty workers aren’t only convenient, they’re downright skilled. They can park cars very efficiently. They wouldn’t mean to brag, but they’d be telling the truth if they said they could probably park better than you and your guests. It’s what they’re trained to do: packing the most amount of cars in the least amount of space.

There’s often a base fee to pay for the parking service. But you could take care of this beforehand so that guests don’t have to pay per vehicle. Though a tip offered by each customer to the valet parker is customary. About $2 per car, and maybe a dollar or two extra if any special parking directions are requested.

Valet attendants shine in urban areas where parking is scant. People will want to park their cars immediately and get going to the event. Even if parking is not hard to find, having this burden taken out of the equation can really help a guest feel comfortable, invited, and in many ways, catered to and taken care of. It’s warm and hospitable, and adds an air of privilege and luxury to an event.

Let’s take a look at valet attendants’ work outside the realm of private events. In these cases, the valet service provides more than luxury, it adds a high degree of convenience. At Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, you’ll find emergency room valet parking. This can take a load off the immediacy of an emergency, and allows for the swiftness of an ambulance service: You pull up to the curb, help the patient out and into the hospital, and you do not have to worry about your car being parked in the right place. A valet attendant will arrive and snatch your vehicle before it becomes a parking obstruction—or before it receives a parking ticket.

Many valet attendants don’t only park the cars. There are the greeters and the stackers as well as parkers. Depending on the size of the venue, valet attendants may run a shuttle service from the parking area to the main event.

Before a valet attendant service is hired, the company owner can visit the location of the event to evaluate transportation needs. The owner will see whether a shuttle service will be necessary, for instance, and where signs will have to be placed. They can also predict the amount of cars that will need to be parked. These valet services have their own insurance policies, too, so you won’t have to worry about the legalities of a hired business parking other peoples’ cars.

When considering whether to hire a valet attendant service, think about the impression it makes. Parking is the beginning and ending of the event. How will guests remember being greeted on arrival and departure?
