What is Pest Control?

Kelly Brown | October 6, 2009

Those suffering from pest problems in their home or at work should consider solving the problem with a professional service. While there are options for doing it yourself, a commercial pest control service will ensure the infestation is eradicated, and will service the areas around your home or office, as well as the interior.

What is it?

Commercial pest control is the destruction of pests. Many companies specialize in specific pests, and others handle species, or general control. For instance, a company may focus on eradicating termites. Another company may focus on termites, as well as other insects and bugs. Yet another company may have the ability to work with insects, birds, and rodents. There is no advantage to choosing one company over another, unless you want their expertise focused solely on your pest. Someone who works to remove only termites will be an expert on termite behavior and infestation, while someone who does general work may not be as educated in a particular species.

Possible infestations include: ant, bird, fly, roach, rodents, stored-product pests like weevils, mosquitoes, bed bugs, lizards, and fleas. Those who live in certain areas of the country will be influenced differently by different pests. Someone in the southwest may suffer from a lizard infestation, while those in the southeast may be more concerned with mosquitoes. Keep in mind certain pests may carry disease, so it is important to deal with their presence before it is out of control.

According to Cherylyn Salerno of Lawn Doctor, a nationwide lawn services company, commercial pest control should treat the perimeter of a property. This helps keep the pests away from the area so they never enter the home. It also creates a safer, cleaner environment indoors because no chemicals are used to treat the home. Perimeter pest control is a great solution if you do not already have a problem and you are looking to prevent one from occurring. However, if your home or office is already infested, you may need to opt for traditional pest control that sprays inside the home. A combination of the two is most likely to fix your current infestation problem and prevent new ones from happening.

Who needs it?

Homes in certain areas are more likely to be at risk for infestation. The desert and mountain areas run the risk of visits from rodents, lizards, and birds, more so than urban dwellings. However, those living in urban environments like town homes, condominiums, apartments, or domestic locations sharing space with commercial space are likely to suffer from a roach problem. Suburban homes have a general risk for all infestation problems, and those living near wooded environments will want to pay special attention to the potential mosquito problems in the yards.

Businesses are more likely to suffer from bug and rodent infestations than other pests. Roaches and mice are often found in most business offices. Keep in mind that food businesses and areas with food should be treated differently than general office areas. Because pest control includes a variety of poisonous chemicals, special care should be taken to protect food preparation and storage areas. Be sure to speak with the professional pest control expert about preparing your area for treatment.

Benefits

The main benefit to commercial pest control is that it almost always gets rid of the problem. It can help you create a cleaner home or work environment. The space is safer when no pests are carrying disease or creating mess. If you have small children, you will want to make sure the pest control expert uses materials that are safe for young children. However, ridding a home of pests is going to create a healthier environment for children, especially those who are learning to crawl and walk, and spending a good deal of their waking hours on the floor.

A pest-free environment will be safer for animals, as well. Be sure to remove pets from the property before the pest control process begins. But once they have returned with their owners, they are likely to benefit from a cleaner, safer environment. If you work in a business with children or animals, be sure to speak with the pest control expert before the treatment to determine what can be done to protect your little or furry clients.

Risks

The main risk of pest control is the chemical treatments that are used. While most experts will tell you the chemicals they use are safe and approved for use around people and animals, you are still introducing a chemical substance to your home or office. A lot of people these days are opting for natural cleaning supplies and products. So if this is a concern for you, you will want to carefully consider your commercial pest control options. Aside from environmental concerns, you may find that you or a family member is allergic to the chemicals. If you know someone in your family is sensitive to chemicals, you may want to arrange for him to spend a few days away while the home is being treated. If you are responsible for treating a work environment, speak with fellow employees about the upcoming treatment and make accommodations for those who are concerned about their exposure. Finally, take into account that commercial pest control may not always be kind to the pest. Consider the pros and cons concerning each of your options.

Having a home or office infested with a pest can be unhealthy, annoying, and dangerous. If you have concerns about pests, consider commercial pest control.
