What is Lock Bumping?

Robert Campbell | October 2, 2009

According to Robert Campbell, owner of Advantage Locksmith NYC in New York City, lock bumping is where someone tries to insert keys into other people’s locks to gain access. It can be done with a standard cylinder lock but not with high-security cylinder locks like Medeco or Mul-T-Lock. The depths and cuts of these high-security locks make it difficult to bump their cylinder. It can damage locks so that one’s key no longer works. So when you spend a little more on a lock, you can prevent suffering the consequences of lock bumping.
