If your water heater shows signs of wear and tear, it might be time to invest in a new one, says Rick Hedge, owner and president of The Plumber’s Plumber, based in Southwestern Florida. Here, he talks about how to tell if your water heater is on its last legs.
Water heaters generally last approximately seven years. We recommend that when they reach that age, you take a close look at them to assess their condition.
If they are visibly leaking, rusty, or corroded, then in our opinion, the only choice you have is to replace the water heater. Otherwise, heaters can be repaired by replacing elements and/or thermostats, therefore extending the life of the heater.
You can also buy extended warranties on heaters, and oftentimes it’s the same heater; you are just purchasing an extended service plan. Under different circumstances, it might be beneficial to do that.
Hot Water Loss
If something is wrong with your water heater, you will know it. Typically, if there is a problem, you can lose hot water, or the hot water supply in your home can fluctuate. In that case, your heater will need to be repaired by a professional.
It is often difficult to correctly ascertain what exactly is wrong with the water heater. It can be a problem with the heater itself; it can be a problem with some electrical aspect of the heater. That’s why it can be so important for a professional to come in and have a look.
