Reduce Carpet and Floor Wear

John Pletz | September 29, 2009

Cleaning carpets and correctly maintaining the surfaces of the floors in your business is important. Regular maintenance not only makes for a much more healthy and pleasant environment, it also cuts down considerably on costs. Keeping carpets and floors sparkling clean and in good overall shape means you have to replace them less often, which can come at an enormous price and be extremely disruptive for the business on the whole.

John Pletz, CEO of ServiceMaster Clean by Pletz based in Crystal Lake, Illinois, stresses that once again it’s a simple maintenance issue. Vacuuming and cleaning carpets on a regular basis is vital, including steam cleaning, or hot water extraction. Matting is also paramount to extending the life of carpets and floors, whether the mats are on a tile floor or a carpet.

Hard surface matting should be used on vinyl floors, both front and inside mats, which can trap dirt and capture large particles before people actually step inside the central interior of the building and track dirt and debris around. Indoor mats will also capture moisture, which is important for both safety and to prolonging flooring life. Vinyl and hard surface floors should also be swept and mopped on a regular basis.

High, Low and Medium Traffic Areas

Cleaning high traffic areas is important. One way to do this is to set up a regular cleaning schedule, breaking your office down into high, medium and low-traffic areas. The high-traffic areas should be cleaned most frequently, for example every three months. The medium-traffic areas can be cleaned every six months, while the low-traffic areas can be cleaned just once a year, depending on the traffic pattern that comes into your building.

Doing it this way – dividing your office into three types of traffic areas - can actually can be less expensive than cleaning 100% of your carpets twice a year. It makes more financial sense and can make your entire office or business look better, which will also increase both customer/client and employee satisfaction.

Surface Abrasions Make Things Worse

Interestingly, most people are not aware that one of the most abrasive things that can fall onto a floor is human hair. In a barbershop, the amount of hair which can fall on a floor in just one days is just incredible. And believe it or not, it really wears the floor

Obviously a substance such as sand would be much worse for your average floor, but hair is very abrasive. We have found this to be the case through years of experience and we share this knowledge with barber shops and beauty salons, telling them to sweep and mop often to prolong the life of their floors.
