How to Stop Pain From New Teeth

Daniel Klein | March 23, 2010

As one would expect, the growth of any new tooth erupting in to the mouth, whether it is a baby’s tooth or a permanent tooth, can cause quite a bit of discomfort as it breaks through the gum tissue. Whether you are the parent of an infant, or a child in elementary school, Daniel Klein D.D.S., who owns his own family dental practice in Pittsford, New York, explains how you can help ease the pain of this new addition.

Signs that a new tooth is growing

As the roots of your child’s first teeth start to grow during infancy, it will push the edges of the enamel through the gums. And, since at this age (usually teeth start forming in the first year) your child is unable to verbally communicate her discomfort, you may notice these changes:

  • Increased fussiness or crying
  • Drooling
  • Chewing on fingers and other objects
  • Swollen or red gums
  • Poor appetite

In older children who are expecting the growth of permanent teeth, the signs are more conclusive. For starters, at this age, she will be able to tell you that her gums hurt. You will also notice that baby teeth begin to fall out as their roots dissolve and new teeth begin to emerge. In either instance, says Klein, you can do a few things to help ease any discomfort your child is experiencing during the process:

  • Apply a topcial anesthetic with a cotton swab to the area of the gums that is experiencing the growth. That will lessen the pain associated with the eruption process.
  • Give your child softer foods. Hard, crunchy foods can make the tissue even more painful because of irritation and the pressure that is applied to the gums when chewing the food.
  • Keep your child’s mouth clean. That will minimize pain because there is less inflammation in someone whose dental hygiene is exceptional.
