How to Get Rid of Bedbugs

Brian Hanly | February 24, 2010

Few people are aware of the fact that the best person to sniff out a bedbug infestation is not a person at all, but a dog. That’s right – a four-legged animal with a wet nose and wagging tail. Brian Hanly is a spokesperson for JP McHale Pest Management Inc., the leader in pest control and extermination across the three states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He talks here about how you can hire a special K-9 inspector to get rid of your own bedbug problems.

If you have any bedbug problem in your home or business, then call us. Not a lot of companies have canine inspectors, which can sniff out bedbugs much more efficiently than a human inspector can. We offer the latest in canine efficiency, with professional canine teams that can be over 90% accurate in sniffing out any bedbug infestation.

We bring our canine team to a home, for example, and let them go to work. We will inspect the entire home to see if any bedbugs are present, including not only beds, but also couches, chairs, drawers and more. Our K9 dogs will come in with the inspectors, and after the dog inspects, the handler will mark the areas where bedbugs have been found. When the pest management professional comes in, they will know exactly where the bedbugs are, so treatment is actually more effective when we use our products.

K9 Program

Part of what makes our K9 program so efficient is that after we do the treatment, the dog will come in and make sure that all the areas have been controlled. Appointments are usually available for the next day, as we sub-contract with a company called Inspector K9. We work hand-in-hand with this company to develop the whole inspection treatment program.

All a lot of canine inspections do is inspect, but they do not do the whole program. But with us, all you have to do is deal with one company, not two. We use technology such as bar coding, mapping software, and internet-accessible reports, which enable us to document historical data. This has been incredibly effective in large hotel settings where certain rooms, or areas of the hotel, have been particularly problematic.

Leaving Small, Red Marks Behind

If you have bedbugs you, will wake up and notice small red bite marks on your arm. A lot of people are allergic to them and develop allergic reactions, such as large rashes. Typically, people will go to their doctor not realizing what they are, and many doctors have trouble diagnosing bedbugs. They were prevalent in the 1950s and are now making a comeback because they used to use DDT to eliminate them, which is not longer legal.

Now we have to use other treatment options to get rid of this nasty menace. Some people may argue that the use of DDT was effective — which it was — but it was also dangerous to consumer health. We use various other options in conjunction with the sniffer dog team, and we guarantee that your bedbug infestation will disappear, as we will keep coming back until the unpleasant creatures are gone.
