Why to Get an HVAC Maintenance Agreement

Patrick Dennis | January 21, 2010

When it comes to preserving your heating and cooling systems so that they’ll serve you well in the long run, many professionals in the industry feel that preventative maintenance is key. While some homeowners might also subscribe to this line of thinking, others tend to have more difficulty wrapping their heads around the notion of spending time and money tending to systems that aren’t actually broken. As the owner of Priority Aire Cooling and Heating, a Las Vegas company dedicated to its customers’ heating, cooling, and ventilation needs, Patrick Dennis is of the opinion that proactive heating and cooling system maintenance is extremely important. He therefore offers a cost-effective option to entice homeowners to get onboard with this line of thinking in the form of the HVAC maintenance agreement.

While HVAC companies offer maintenance agreements with varying terms, Priority Aire offers a few options for people looking to take a proactive approach to heating and cooling system upkeep. The company’s most basic option is a four-year maintenance agreement. In exchange for a modest monthly fee, customers on the basic plan are entitled to one heating system inspection (during the fall) and one cooling system inspection (during the spring) per year. Over the course of a four-year period, each subscriber to the basic plan will receive a total of eight inspections to ensure that his systems continue to run smoothly throughout the duration of the agreement.

Of course, these regular heating and cooling inspections only represent a fraction of the overall benefits inherent in Priority Aire’s maintenance agreements. As part of each initial heating and cooling system inspection, a customer is entitled to a full system cleaning, which can help minimize energy costs throughout the year by helping these systems run more efficiently. Additionally, if an annual heating or cooling system inspection does happen to reveal a problem, then a subscriber becomes eligible to have the necessary repair work performed at a reduced cost as a component of the basic maintenance agreement. And in such situations, those on the company’s higher level plans could be eligible for service calls at absolutely no charge. Therefore, while the average customer with a maintenance agreement might not hope for problems with his heating and cooling systems, in many cases, the monthly fee can more than pay for itself in reduced service and repair charges.

While the aforementioned aspects of a Priority Aire maintenance agreement are certainly ones to consider, perhaps the most significant benefit lies in the fact that customers with such agreements in place are guaranteed to receive 24-hour HVAC service as necessary. This type of assurance can come in handy during peak heating and cooling seasons, when most licensed contractors are overbooked. While not every HVAC company is willing to make such promises, even in exchange for a monthly fee, Dennis feels that the 24-hour service guarantee is an effective means of rewarding customers for their loyalty and commitment.

Signing up for an HVAC maintenance agreement is sort of like joining a gym: You might not want to go all the time, but the financial commitment involved in the membership is often enough to get you off the couch and onto the treadmill. The same holds true for heating and cooling system inspection and maintenance: You might not want to do it, but you should know the terms of your agreement in order to get your money’s worth.

If you do sign up for an HVAC maintenance agreement, then you should only do so with an HVAC company that you can truly trust. Unless a particular company happens to come highly-recommended, wait until you’ve had a couple of good experiences before locking yourself into a long-term maintenance agreement. Remember, an HVAC maintenance agreement is only as good as the company that issues it. So if you’re going to take this rather important step in preserving your heating and cooling systems, then you might as well go with the best.
