What is Care Credit?

Paula Gilmartin | October 14, 2009

Anyone who is interested in undergoing an elective medical treatment that is not covered by insurance has a payment option available to them through something called Care Credit. Care Credit is a credit card and line of credit that can be used to pay for healthcare treatments and procedures for everyone in your family, including pets. It can be used at over 100,000 providers in the United States.

Care Credit is a regular credit card or credit account, except for the fact it is designed specifically for healthcare procedures. People who are concerned about keeping their credit under control should understand this card will only be accepted by healthcare professionals. It is an efficient way to manage medical treatments that are not covered by traditional health insurance.

Potential Care Credit users can apply for the card online. A lot of medical facilities also offer the application paperwork and will provide you with information about the program. Care Credit can be used for a variety of services including Lasik and vision surgery, cosmetic procedures such as skin rejuvenation and laser hair removal, dental procedures, hearing improvement, veterinary procedures, bariatric procedures, hair restoration, and chiropractic treatments. Care Credit does not offer introductory rates or teaser rates. They are upfront with their credit options. There is also no annual fee for the card, no application fee, and no pre-payment penalties. The Care Credit website offers a payment calculator so you will know exactly how much your treatment will cost you each month. Care Credit is not an insurance policy. It is a Credit Card and should be managed as such. This means it is important to use it carefully and treat it as you would any credit card. Also keep in mind those who have experienced past credit problems may not be eligible for Care Credit approval.

Care Credit can be used for treatments that are not covered, or which are only partially covered, by medical insurance. Care Credit is endorsed by a variety of medical organizations including the Academy of General Dentistry, the Society of Excellence in Eyewear, the American Society of Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Dermatological Surgery.

As a matter of fact, dermatological procedures are one of the most common uses of Care Credit. Those who are interested in services such as hair restoration, laser hair removal, and various cosmetic skin procedures can benefit from using Care Credit. Paula Gilmartin, regional manager and aesthetic nurse trainer at Dermalounge, a medical spa in California, informs potential clients that one year of interest payments are paid by her medical spa. This means patients using Care Credit receive one year of interest-free payments. The opportunity offers clients an opportunity to receive services at the regular cost, but spread their payments out over the course of 12 months. This way, services that would otherwise be unaffordable become accessible to a wider range of clients.

Approach your skincare procedure as you would any other medical procedure. While you may find qualified clinics that offer coupons or discount packages, price should not be your first consideration. It is more important to find a qualified, experienced facility. If this means the cost of your chosen procedures are slightly out of your price range, Care Credit can help you afford them. If you are interested in improving your appearance, and investing in a treatment that will improve the health and appearance of your skin, consider Care Credit to help you pay for your procedure.
